' band are waiting for the phone to ring waiting to hear their casework- er tell them they have been chosen to be parents The waiting is hard and they hope their longing for a baby can somehow coincide with someone else’s difficult circumstances in a way that will bring peace to everyone involved ' ' The more I learn about adoption the more I see it as one of the most incredible ways to show account-ability for actions The First Presidency of the An LDS member’s perspective Church wrote a letter announcing official policy regarding unmarried parents and unexpected pregnancies back in 1994 The entire letter along with information for potential birth parents and people considering adoption is available at wwwitsaboutloveqrg LDS Family Services' Web site ’“Every effort should be made in helping those who conceive out of wedlock to establish an eternal Family relationship” the letter reads “When the unwed parents are unable or unwilling to many they should be encouraged to place the child for adoption preferably through LDS Unwed parents Family Services who do not many should not be counseled to keep the infant as a condition of repentance or out of an obligation to care for one’s own The best interests of the child should be the paramount consideration” Considering the needs of the ' expected child more than one's own needs is the ultimate lesson in accountability for birth parents and birth grandparents too A nurse in the labor and delivery ward at the hospital where I had my son said she had seen a few women liferajly' place their babies for adoption with a waiting couple turning a man and a woman into a dad and a mom with the gift of her newborn It was thrilling to see she said' but it didn't happen often ' Every situation is different and making an adoption plan may not be thie ' right choice in every scenario But it’s probably the right choice more often than it's choseni with the worldlier alternatives of abortion and single parenting even in tough winning out most of the time For everyone — waiting parents and worried birthparents — an adoption plan can bring blessings of peace and can show true account- ability while lovingly offering what is best for the child ' Saffy Wright is a mom and free lance writer living in Brigham City She ia a member of the LDS Church HN She can be reached at : |
