W NIELSEN NIELSENA t Hr i A few years back we started started started start start- ed out to get some notes on the early history of our town This week we tried to find them but as we are handicapped handicapped handicapped handi handi- capped by poor eyesight we will have to give you what we can remember We thought it would be interesting Isaac Behunin was the first known white man to camp on Ephraim Creek Later he hc moved to Gunnison where some of his grandchildren are still living George Taylor Sr was the first mayor of our town Supplies of medicines and most other things were far away in the late SOs SO's and early of the nineteenth century A Dr Ship was the first doctor then Dr Briggs But Dr was really the first doctor to practice medicine medicine medicine medi medi- cine sere here ere He cured more people by scaring them than by medicine His favorite method was Oh get up and go to work You are not sick A Mrs Indian Mariah was the first nurse or midwife then Molly Thorpe Mrs So Sophia Sophia Sophia So- So phia Bailey Mrs Stevens and Mary Newton Petersen who was the last of the midwife era From then on nurses trained in the hospitals up upstate upstate upstate state helped out the doctors A Mr McFarlane h had d brot with him from the East a supply of medicine He was one of the best to help out when sickness hit The story was told that while he was swabbing the throat of ofa a boy the boy started to cough and a portion of the codine got into McFarlane's eyes yes and blinded him Paul Von Nordia was the first druggist A Dr Burnell was v the first dentist Charles Whitlock and F. F Y Jensen each had some forceps and often pulled aching teeth Peter Madson and Andreas were the first builders builders build build- ers of our town Carrie Olsen Olsen Olsen Ol- Ol sen was the first telegraph operator Joe Quinn was the first barber Charles Whitlock Whitlock Whitlock Whit- Whit lock and George Quinn the first harness makers The first Opera house was east cast on Center Street near the former Ivan Benson home The first hotel was run by Mrs Dorius across the street from Christensen's store The first beauty shop w was s sin in every home where there was a girl and believe it or not our town had the reputation reputation reputation tation of having the most b beautiful girls in all the land And another thing that should have come first Yence Peter Peterson was the first baby boy born here Willard Pehrson opened up the first saloon We dont don't know who the first drunk was |
