Show P.G. Football Tears? Champions of The Alpine Division With three wins and no losses in league play, the Pleasant Grove Vikings have annexed the Alpine division championship; and are now knocking on the door for the Region III title. After the 27 to 12 win over the American Fork Cavemen, Cave-men, the Battle Creek Boys are in a favored spot to cop the Region III championship and go on into the state playoffs. Games in the near-offing include a Thursday afternoon contest with Juab High School and a non-league non-league hassel Friday afternoon with Union. Both games are scheduled sched-uled for 2:30 p.m. on the local ball park. Since the Juab boys are relatively rela-tively new at the game and have been soundly trounced each time they have played this year, the Nephi game should be a shoo-in. In fact, due to an understanding between the two schools, the game will be played on a forfeit basis, provided the Vikings use only Sophomores and Junior varsity in the game. Friday afternoon's lilt with Union Un-ion is largely hi the nature of a tune-up for the Vikings for the big one cornin gup on Friday, Nov. 4 at thet BYU stadium. Pleasant Glove's opponent for the Nov. 1 contest for the Region HI championship cham-pionship will be the winner of the Lir.coln-Springville clash Friday of this week. In the American Fork game la.st week the Vikings made football history as they downed American Fork for their first win over the Cavemen in modern Region 3 rivalry. riv-alry. The Vikings started their scoring scor-ing antics so rapidly that it completely com-pletely threw the Forkers off their stride and they failed to show anything any-thing of their traditional prowess until late in the game when Coach Alger had permitted his Viking first stringers to cool off. American Fork kicked off to open the contest and the Vikings immediately began a drive that netted them a touchdown inside the first five minutes of play. The Grover line opened big gaping gap-ing holes in the American Fork forward wall that sent speedy 175 pound Paul Allen crashing through for big gains. One of Allen's runs was good for 50 . yards and two more carric' for better than 15 yards. Hal Lewis cracked over center for a short gain and then Allen found a great hole and behind some great Pleasant Grove blocking smashed his way over the goal line. He finished the last three yards dragging a pair of American Fork tacklers. Paul Anderson kicked! kick-ed! the extra point to get the Grovers off to a good start. The second score came with startling suddenness less than two minutes after the kick. The Forkers Fork-ers failed to gain from scrimmage and lofted a short kick to mid-field. mid-field. (Continued on page 4) pootball . . . (Continued from page 1) Two line plays netted a first down and then Allen found a gaping gap-ing hole in the forward wall and romped 30 yards for the second score. Anderson completed the play with another perfect kick and the Vikings led 14-0 before the fans all realized the game was underway. un-derway. Pleasant Grove struck again in the second period. The teams exchanged ex-changed fumbles to momentarily stop play, then Jay Johnson threw a strike to Dan Buckner; Paul Allen moved the ball to the 12-yard 12-yard stripe on a plunge around left end; and Bill Trimble caught the Forker defense napping and ran for a touchdown on a beautifully beau-tifully executed end-around play. Paul Anderson made it three in a row -with a perfect kick thru the uprights. The Cavemen began to show signs of life in the third period. A pass from Dick Thornton to big Allen Hansen at end ran the ball to the Pee Gee 24. Lee Taylor Tay-lor picked up five yards around end and the Forkers seemed to be on the march, but a pass by Paul Hansen was intercepted by Paul Anderson who ran the ball back to the goal line. However, the play was called back and the Vikings were penalized for clipping. clip-ping. An American Fork fumble paved pav-ed the way for the final Grover score in the third period. Hal Lewis made a nice run to place the ball o nthe Forker 8 yard mark. Two plunges at the line failed fail-ed to make the necessary yardage but the ball was given to the elusive elus-ive and hard driving Allen and he smashed his way over the goal., Anderson missed his first kick in four attempts to wind up the Grover Gro-ver scoring- with 27 points. A poor kick on a punt by Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove paved th.e way for the first American Fork touchdown late in the third period. The ball went straight in the air and was downed by American Fork on the Vikings 40-yard mark. At this point Lee Taylor uncorked a beautiful beau-tiful pass to end Rick Webber who romped down the sidelines and into in-to the end zone. Allen Preston's kick was wide, but the Forkers had scored. Another nice aerial in the fourth quarter set up the play for the second Forker touchdown. A pass to Dick Brown was completed on the Viking 26 and another toss from Dick Thornton to Lee Taylor was good for the score. Preston's kick was blocked by the hard-charging Pleasant Grove line. It was the fast and hard line play of the Pleasant Grove team that gave them the victory. They split the home team's wall consistently con-sistently during the game providing provid-ing big holes through which Paul Allen and his mates galloped. Allen Al-len was the scoring hero again with three touchdowns but he was helped by some deadly and timely blocking. |
