In discussion, Dr. Cabert stated that the fetus is completely formed at about 10 weeks, and at that point there is even a heart beating. He pointed out though that until after the 28th week there is no way that it could survive, without complete dependence on the mother. Proponents of legalized abortion for Utah appeared, to emphasize that abortion should be available to those who want and need it on the reasoning that it would help eliminate unwanted children and so help preserve the quality of life in the society. "No pregnancy is an accident," said Mrs. Beatrice Marchant, mother of 15 and Utah State legislator. She cited chastity as the answer to unwanted pregnancy. Dr. Harvey Cabert, Anne Poore and Robert Weatherbee, a representative of Zero Population Growth who was also on the panel, said that they felt one of the real answers to unwanted pregnancies is contraceptives, but because there was no sure answer, abortion should be available to those women that want it |
