Show About Killing Religions. It is not jolly to read tn the News that the people of France may persecute their church, but that they cannot kill it. Further in view of the fact that quite three-fifths of the people are devoted Catholics. Those in power in Franco have determined that there shall be a complete separation of church and state. Of the means taken to accomplish that separation we have nothing at this time to say, but then the deter-minatlon deter-minatlon there has nothing in it that is not in the Constitution of Utah, a majority of whoso makers were Latter-day Saints. Did they Intend to kill any church when they inserted that clause? The News has a right to be bigoted and insincere, but it should not be silly. sil-ly. As to killing any religion we do not think that has ever been done, but a thousand so-called religions have died, either through the tyranny or false priests or from the r ' intelligence of followers. Dowie. had a mof urisinng religion re-ligion six or seven years ago. declared himself him-self an inspired prophet, said he was set aside to build up the true church and that he could perform the same miracles that the Messiah did. He gathered some millions of dollars from his dupes and flourished mightily. The chances are that in six or seven years more he will be well-nigh forgotten except by his dupes, and tho mention of his "Church" will be a theme for jest. Our neighbor should not get silly when it tries to be too profound. Speaking of religions that of the master, and " of Buddha before Him, were founded in peace and good will to man. They have spread over the whole earth. Since they were promulgated a thousand other religions have sprung up, nourished nour-ished for a season and died. Violence cannot destroy de-stroy those two for they came working for no earthly honors or emoluments. They were simply sim-ply guides to better lives and not grafting machines ma-chines to eat out the substance of the people. Churches are like other things. They stand or fall on their merits alone. |
