Show South Girl, Youth From Olympus Win Foreign Trips Two southeast area students have been selected to represent their schools in American Field Services international scholarship program. The honors mean that the teenagers teen-agers will be traveling abroad this summer the places to be announced an-nounced in about six weeks as "young goodwill ambassadors" of the United States. Most of the expense will be borne by their parents. The two chosen are Joyce Bartschi, 16-year-old junior at South High School, and Steve Kilmer, Kil-mer, also a junior at Olympus High School. Only juniors participate partici-pate in the program so that they may share their experiences with fellow students next year. Young Miss Bartschi, a daughter of Mr. Darel P. Bartschi of 2376-8th 2376-8th East St, seems to be "riding on top of a cloud" since the announcement an-nouncement of her selection, according ac-cording to Mrs. Bartschi. Her father is hoping that Joyce will be sent to Switzerland. The trip, which will last from mid-June mid-June to mid-September of this year, will be to either Europe, South America, Australia or New Zealand, according to Bartlett Wicks, Utah chairman of the AFS program. Steve, a son of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Kilmer, 3054 E. 3960 South, said that he believed the trip would be a real challenge "but I'm sure I can meet it." "I'll put everthing I have into it and I know it will be a great experience." Young Kilmer has no particular preference on the country he will visit. He's president of the Modern Language Club at Olympus Olym-pus and is now in his second year of French. These two students, along with seven other students chosen for the Salt Lake area, will be feted Thursday at Kennecott Copper Corporation. |
