To avoid this needless waste, it is advisable to know the germina-tion tables of all flowers planted. For example, here are some flowers which usually germinate within five to six days: ageratum, amaran-thu- s anthemis - candytuft - cardinal climber - centaurea - clarkia -- calliopsis - cosmos - cnnoglossum - dahlias - annual pinks - heleniums -- marigolds - mignonette - four-o-cloc-ks - zinnias. When a flower has large seed and colorful blossom, it is bound to be widely grown and popular, being easy to grow. Marigolds and zinnias share the popularity prize with petunias. Petunias, however, are an exception to the rule among the popular flowers. They have very small seeds and take up to 12 days and more to germinate. Petunias are seldom sown directly in the garden. Flowers that take ten days to germinate include: acroclinum -- anchusa - snapdragons - asters - balsam - calendula - carnation -- cerastium - cleome - California poppy - gysophila - lobelia - lupine -- nigella - pansy - poppy - portulaca - scabiosa - tithonia. Flowers that are much slower, taking 15 to 20 days to germinate include: begonia - godetia - impatiens - kochia - primula - salvia -- salpiglossis - sweet peas - larkspur. Of these larkspur and salpiglossis seldom thrive when they are transplanted and should be sown directly in the garden. When seeds are sown directly in the garden, extreme care should be taken that the seed bed is not disturbed before sprouts appear. Green Thumbs, Don't Grow Impatient Over Slow Seeds . . . Like most 'of gardening's frustrations, impatience over slow sprouting seeds usually disappears as the gardener acquires more knowledge and experience. Flower seeds have a wide time range in germination, and the gardener who looks for a slow-germinati- ng seed to show some activi-ty a week after it is planted is doomed to disappointment and needless fear that something is wrong. When the new gardener decides his seeds are lifeless because they haven't sprouted he is apt to abandon them. Then, when a week orated Li any development of the area. 8. All buildings erected should be owned and operated under the control of a Park Administration. 9. A tourists orientation build-ing should be set up in the north-east corner also to house the Park Administration. 10. The committee took note of the fact that their recommended plans could only be carried out at great cost But, that it should be done a little at a time and that the nature of the project justified the allocation of sufficient funds each year to provide for continued development toward the ultimate goal. They also noted that the -- time would probably come when public spirited private donors would volunteer to promote the project as they had other worthy causes during the past. 11. The Park Authority recom-mended by the committee should be jointly selected by the City and County and made up of public minded men who would serve for the love of service Their terms should be overlapping. Also the possession operation and develop-ment of the Park would be theirs as largely as possible and they be allowed to employ a paid staff. This would unify and give con-tinuity of operation, also dissemin-ate a greater interest in and per-- or ior Prison-Sit- e Park (Continued from Page 1) the new park was "Sugar Mill Park." 4. It was recommended that the Denver and Rio Grande close down and remove its tracks through the park area which would probably not be difficult to accomplish since the railroad has already closed out its Park City service. Provis-ions for spur. freight trackage to businesses was noted and allowed for. 5. Another recommendation would allow for the acquistion of property lying between this tract and 13th East and for addition to the park of the property lying be-tween it and the extension of 17th sonai sense responsiDiniy operation and development among the people of the city and county. Pending legislative action an operating committee can be ap-pointed with sufficient appropria-tion to get started. 12. This recommendation con-sidered the legal status of the land. The committee members were Harold F. Fabian, Chairman, Pearce Brady, Otto Buehner, Com-missioner E. Q. Cannon. Roy D. Free, Richard S Roberts, and Commissioner L. C. Romney. East. Accessibility to and from boundary streets is particularly important since the south side will be entirely closed by the coming expressway to Parley's Canyon. 6. .Committeemen recommended that this be done as soon as possi-ble to avoid rising costs 7. Ashton, Evans and Brazier were complimented on their plan-ning and it was especially recom-mended that the outdoor swiming pool, amphitheater and stage as outlined in their sketch be incorp- - FOR PRIVACY - BEAUTY - SAFETY WITH IpipBiik CAL I FOR N IA .
