Show ficq to P 9 t ll 11 I 1 h I 1 h 1100 orand junction june 3 this mornings 0 sentinel gives the follow I 1 ing account of tho the recent i 1 cibit of the chamber of commerce to vernal grand junction has a magnificent opportunity to reach out and serve commercially the great uintah baalu area that region tan be made tributary to I 1 grand graild junction by the expenditure of a nominal sum ahat la is the epitomized verdict of tile the business men a committee who returned yesterday yest erda from a weeks inspection spec tion trip as to the feasibility cost coalby and all other phases of the proposed route into that section the parti part was composed of such well known business men and progressive und and substantial citizens as william burghorn Bur thorn william welber weiser C D smith and frank halt hall of this city and dr W it white fruita and adwin lazear of garmisa the committee has made a complete report of the trip for the benefit of the public the report is ia complete in all details and in substance is as aa I 1 follows j the party left orand grand junction wednesday morning may 21 the county commissioners accompanied the party and inspected the roads to I 1 I 1 a point near the top of the divide I 1 at the garmisa ranch tb tha party transferred from automobiles to the Gar garmela niesa truck where they were taken ion nearly to the top of the hill a distance of about thirty five miles wet west of grand junction at this point they were net by john otto and hla his camp outfit consisting of three horses and five burros we then proceeded ded to follow a faioli fairly 90 good od road to the top of the divide some three miles reaching an altitude of about feet the first night camp was waa made about three miles the other side of tho the pass and supper was served ini in the usual good style by william duthorn buthorn after which the committee organized electing william weiser as aa chairman and spokesman the next da day the party proceeded walking and driving burros and inspected the road down east cast to douglas creek to the clifora clifford adams ranch where west douglas creek joins east douglas creek at this point the committee was mas greatly pleased with the road conditions and agreed that same could bo be put in excellent condition and made practically an all year road at a nominal cost F from the adams ranch to range ly a distance of eighteen miles the road was found to be washed out badly in places and would require bridging and nd more or less lesa grading to put the road in good condition for truck service rangely langely wes acs reached late in the evening after two days traveling saturday afternoon the vernal commercial club sent automobiles and the party was taken to vernal where they were most cordially received and entertained in a most royal way at the expense of 0 the vernal commercial club we were driven over the valley ln in automobiles giving us an idea of the vastness of the uintah basin and the wonderful possibilities it offers in the evening our committee met with a very enthusiastic meeting attended by representative citi citizens zeng who decided that a committee of throe three be appointed consisting of lawrence allan walter darnea barnes and civo houghl county to make the return trip with us over what Is called whisky creek and bax terrass ter pass on top of the divide a meeting was held and resulted in an agreement that a careful survey be made at once of tho the most practical route which seemed to be via doug las creek and rangely langely on the top of baxter baiter pass we parted with our rood friends from vernal all feeling that something of great importance for both the aln tah basin and grand junction had been accomplished and that actual work could be started in the very near future which would connect theao two yo great western empires we walked down the steep grade of baxter pass inspecting the possibilities bili ties of a road to atchee we proceeded from there in a flat hand car which we were compelled compel to push with bore feet and bodies a distance of some twelve miles reaching mack about 2 a in in time to make connections with no 2 for for grand junction while the trip under the circumstances we were traveling was an exceedingly hard one yet the committee feel that the time and money has been well spent and that an active campaign should be launched whereby we can raise sufficient funds to complete this great highway which will add untold Te resources sources to moba county and the grand valley tile the road can be completed at a cost which Is within our reach ing through ja beautiful country at a maximum grade not to exceed 8 or 10 per cent and will shorten the distance between grand junction and vernal some one hundred miles or more |
