Show Monday, May 22, 1972 Organic Gardener's Notes . aM-- t " 1 . Farm and Home Tips i I tC.. Wl, - I can I do to control puncture tine? A. Puncture vine is an annual that comes from seed each year. It can be controlled fairly easily with 2,4-- (marketed under various trade names. Use the spray on the plant when there is sufficient top growth but before the plant goes to seeding. This is not a one-shcontrol deal because new seeds may germinate following a rainstorm or irrigation. This means control might require several applications each year. There are some types of residual chemicals that can be used which will kill new seedlings as they try to germinate. However, these chemicals do have some limitations of use, such as killirg other desired plant growth. Contact the local Extension office for further information. What is the anticipated irrigation and stream flow outlook for this year? A. According to Jerry Hansen of the Provo Soil Conservation Service office, the outlook ranges from 90 to 120 percent of normal, depending on the individual stream. Mr. Hansen last week reported that Utah Lake was about .3 of an inch below compromise. He added this area no longer has the anticipated above normal outlook that was reported earlier this year. The Chinese mantis is the largest variety and was introduced years ago. It now eats its way across the eastern United States, while the native mantis species are smaller and range across the country. Ladybutfs can winter in crevices of buildings, under boards and other protected spots. Other carnivorous insects also account for thousands of destructive pests around gardens each year.
