Droz, the eventual winner, had an unusual situation during the first round of the tourney. He was 90 yards off the 14th green hitting an approach shot. He hit the wires and got the shot over. He hit the wires again. Again he got it over, and again he hit the wires. Max Fillmore was in his group and he jokingly told Droz, "If you hit it again you get a new car." He missed the wire that time, but after all that prrctice put the ball three feet from the pin and got his par. Joey Bonsignore also had a shot that was nothing short of spectacular. He was on the front edge of the 120 foot 10th green with the pin at the back edge. He was 95 feet from the hole with a steep uphill putt. He stroked it, just hoping to be close, and he dropped it in the hole for a sensational birdie. et 3--2, place in the Western Division with the victory over Los Angeles. Bill Singer took the loss. Billy Williams drove in two runs with a single and a homer as Chicago downed St. Louis. Bill Hands went eight innings to get the win and Rirk Wise suffered the loss. Fred Norman, pitched his third straight shutout as San Diego downed Cincinnati in the second game. The Reds won the first behind the seven-h- it pitching of Gary Nolan, who recorded his first complete game of the year. homer Bobby Bonds' two-ru- n with two out in the eighth lifted San Francisco past Atlanta in the second game. The homer gave Ron Bryant the win and beat Ron Reed. In the first Droz' approach shot to the 18th was short and wide of the green, and his chip shot left him with about an putt to save par and a tie for the tournament. Mike Smith's approach was about eight-fefrom the pin which gave himjgood shot at a birdie and sole possession of first place. Droz stroked a beautiful putt that dropped over the front lip of the cup to assure him of a tie with Bonsignore. They both had to wait, however, to see if they had tied for first or second. Mike Smith just missed his putt to the right edge of the hole, which resulted in a three-wa- y tie. On the first sudden death hole Mike Smith had the upper hand all the way. He had a perfect drive and his iron shot to the green was about 30 feet past the pin and two feet off the green, but he was considerably closer than Droz or Bonsignore. Droz had been stymied by a tree, but he lofted a five wood above the tree on his second shot and landed on the front edge of the green with the pin some 90 feet away. His putt was short, for leaving him with an a par. Bonsignore was left of the green by about six feet and had to the pin. to chip some He rolled past the hole leaving him about a ten foot putt. Smith's chip was within two feet of the cup and that left Droz and Bonsignore with pressure situations. Droz drilled his in the hole like he did on the 18th, and then Bonsignore followed suit. Each time those putts dropped it made Smith's two footer seem much longer, but he made his also to send the playoff to the second hole. The second hole was a short par three. Droz put his ball from the pin. Bonsignore lofted his into the sand trap and. Smith went beyond the trap and' some ten yards from the green. Bonsignore got out of the trap in makeable position, and Smith also had a good approach to the pin for a makeable putt. They didn't have to putt, however, as Droz drilled his third straight pressure putt to win the $1,000 ot 5--3, I. pet. g.b. 169.
