Show DUST OF THE STREET CAUSES CONSUMPTION NETV YORK. May 1 It has been discovered dis-covered that the street-cleaning department de-partment employees are 'peculiarly subject : to consumption, and grave alarm Is felt over the appearance of tu-' berculosls among them. According to a report of a medical examiner -recently submitted, one-fifth of the force is affected af-fected with some form of the disease, and an Investigation seems to show that the work of sweeping the streets and ' the coming In contact - with the microbe lurking in the dust are responsible for this state of affairs. The men are absolutely healthy when they begin their work, for they are required re-quired to pass a physical examination and get a clean bill of health from the examiners ex-aminers before they can be appointed. Most of them are strong men, but in a few years after taking up the work of street-cleaning they begin to have lung and bronchial troubles. It is said that about 1000 of them are now afflicted. Numerous requests for sick leave have prompted an Investigation, Investiga-tion, and this developed such a surprising surpris-ing amount of lung trouble that the only -plausible explanation of it is the nature of the work. |
