Show ORIGIN OF NUN'S HEADDRESS. First Placed on Pretty Head by Gallant Gal-lant French King. Very fow persons, says a French papor, know tho origin of tho headdress head-dress which so many nuns wear, and which hides so much of their faces. It was formerly tho custom for convents con-vents to send nuns to the various cities and towns for tho purpose of collecting nims, and as a rulo two nuns, ono old and the other young, wont to each place. Thoy woro small caps, and woro popularly known as "Swallows of Lent." On a certain Ash Wednesday two of them succeeded In obtaining admission admis-sion to tho king's pnlaco in Paris, and though tho monarch and his courtiors woro at dinner, they did not hcsltato to solicit alms from thom. Ono of the nuns was very pretty, and the young nobles who were feasting cast such bold glances at her that sho blushed with shamo, whereupon tho king rose from tho tablo, and, taking his napkin, nap-kin, folded It In two and placed In on her head in such a manner that it concealed her blushes. Ever since that day, It Is said, this kind of head-dross head-dross has been worn by nuus. |
