Show j 0 p S fa e TERRIBLE destruction OF LIFE A little girl on a rait aravs to god DUBOIS penn june 1 the heaviest floods hi the history of dubois occurred thursday rain bagan falling at 11 p in and camo down in torrents without until yesterday boon the low lying parts of the first vard were entirely sal merged small outbuildings buildings out were lifted from their foundations and in many cases floated away the greatest excitement prevailed in tax vicinity of pentz HUG which sepa rates the firby and gacond wards of the city at one time the buildings which face this stream wera in danger of having their foundations undermined der mined but all is safe to casualties are reported jupe 1 A greensberg special ays the first section of the day express which passed here at 9 was laying between sing hollow and johnstown yesterday afternoon when the waters came down the flood cut one of the cars I 1 containing fifty or sisty passengers loose and it was carried away and it is supposed the passengers perished i A few of the occupants of the other cars it is thought escaped but it is doubtful bell of latrobe was conductor and escaped by assistance rendered him JOHNSTOWN pa jane 1 1040 most of ahe accumulation of buildings which were swept by the angry waters to the pennsylvania railroad bridge piled up fully fifty feet high have burned to waters edge before the buildings took fire many people dead and alive were taken from them and in several instances the unfortunates were so wedged in that it was necessary to chop their legs off to relieve them the catholic waa also destroyed by fire this morning people were on the roof when the structure took fire and all of them were consumed in the flames the damage is as yet unknown re gard lees of the great loss of life the pennsylvania railroads loss will be enormous enor mius just before reaching end of the main line of the pennsylvania road is a signal tower and the men in it told stories of they saw so piteous that I 1 could not listen to half of it but here are some little odds and ends to the happenings they told me of A beautiful girl came down on thereof of a house which was swung in near the town she screamed to the operators to save her and one brave fellow walked as far into the river as he could and shouted to guide herself into shore with the butt of a plank she was a plucky girl and stood up on her frail support m evident obedience to the command of tho operator she made two or three bold strokes and actually stopped the course of the raft for an then it swerved from under her she tried to swim ashore but in a few seconds she was lost in the swelling waters something hit her for she lay quietly on her back with her face pallid and expressionless mea and women in dozens in pans and singly children boby big and little and wee babies were in among the awful confusion in the water drowning gasping struggling and fighting desperately pera tely for life two men on a tiny raft shot into the swiftest part of the current they crouched sr olidy at the shores while between them dressed in white kneeling with her face turned heavenward was a girl 6 or 7 years old when she came opposite the town she turned her face to the operator she was so close they could see the big tears on her cheeks and the pallor of death on her face fearless men on the shore shouted to keep up her courage and she resumed her devout attitude and disappeared under the trees of the projecting point a short distance below we could not see her come out again said the operator and that was all of it do you see that fringe of trees said the operator pointing to the place where the little girl had gone out of sight well we baw scores of children swept in there I 1 believe that when the time comes they will find almost bodies of children in there among those bushes |
