I First Massage Direct From Salt Lake Since Saturday Was Received Thie Afternoon, i. W Three rang of men arrived from the north Monday night and yesterday morning to augment the force of local linemen working to repair the damaged Bell telephone aervtee. They were aent out over the city, and between Salt Lake and Ogden, early yeaterday morning, one hundred Manager Harrison of the strong. Bell company la personally supervising the work of reconstruction and he promises e complete service as quickly as human power ran splice wires and erect poles. The first message was sent over the Bell wires to Salt Lake at about I o'clock this afternoon. Damage to the service is eves greater end more general than at first estimated. Lines between Ogden nnd Salt Lake are In a tangled, broken Is condition so that communication limited to few wires. In the vicinity of Farmington nnd Layton along the railroad debris In great heaps held and rolled tightly, by wires and poles, obstruct ths county highway and render telegraph service uncertain. From Salt Lekodatse foices of men have been started toward Ogden over the route of the telephone und telegraph llnea and the wires w 111 be temporarily suspended on splintered portions of poles, until they can be placed later on new poles. Owing to the nature of tbe breaks. It la expected that communication with the capital will be frequently cut off, probably delays of several hours will ooour. Not only 'Is tbe Bell company strenuously engaged in repair work, but the Independent Telephone company, imported a large gang of line men this morning end la mending broken cables. Fortunately fur the Independent company, most .of lie wires In Ogden were encased In cables, and not a small portion of the service Is underground,. so that by tonight ths company expects to have the moat of Its telephones operating mar the city. This morning not more than 100 telephones were out of commission and since then, at, least 100 of these have been repaired. From Twelfth to Thirty-thirstreet, east and west of Washington avenue, the city will be lighted tonight South end north of these points the system will be indefinitely wit of service. On local transmission lines 0 men are engaged In making connections and splicing wires, In order that light may be turned on. It is provable that arcs can be fixed in time for service, but in tbe business section of the city the street lights will he turned on tonight, as they are on a separate wire. Not later than Wednesday night the larger portion of the city will be lighted within end without a welcome condition that will again relegate lamps and oil to the shelf as ancient relict of the past. d GOV.
