school penmanship the vertical system of penmanship is fast gaining popularity in the schools of many of the cities of the country salt lake city has adopted it and now the system is agitating the provo educators A committee appointed by abo teachers has given the enquirer both sides of the question and we are reproducing samples of writing of both systems it would be well for tho public to take an interest in and give voice to its preferences there are so many fads in education now days that it takes considerable care to separate the wheat from the chaff and it should be remembered that a system of education is not for the school but for the entire life of the pupil As a child is taught to write in school so he will write the balance of his life if it be a faulty system taught it may be a great hindrance to him in after days the same is arne of other methods we are not sufficiently acquainted with the vertical system of penmanship to venture a thorough opinion on it the writing has the great merit it is said a child makes more rapid progress with the new system than wi th the slanting style it seems to us however from samples given us that the now system is productive of slowness it may ba a mistake on our part but we advise our readers to give attention to discussion the of the educators published in this issue and should any feel so inclined they may express themselves through our columns Parea claier a favor however by discussing the new system with the teachers of their children for it is public opinion the teachers desire to ascertain
