Show FIGHTING CANKER WORMS. H Interesting Experiment by Prof. Sllngerlnnd nt Cornell University. Tho class taking advanced work In Bag economic entomology at Cornell, N. Y., made an Interesting experiment. writes Prof. Sllngerland In the Cornell Countryman. BBv i For several years a group of largo elm troes about a mlla from tho unl-'erslt unl-'erslt campuB havo been nearly de- BAa foliated by hordes of spring canker-worm canker-worm caterpillars. These llttlo meas-urlng-worms hatch In May from eggs laid on tho bark by moths that emerge VftB in March and April from pupao In the Boll beneath tho trees. Tho mala moths hnvo well-developed BAh wings nnd fly readily, but tho females are wingless and aro thus obliged to BftV crawl up the trees and deposit their eggs on tho bark of tho branches. The scent Is always mndo at night. Varl ous dovlccs, such as sticky bands, und wire, tin or stiff paper barriers, have been used on tho trunks ot trees to prevent tho ascent of tho wingless fo- BAf malo moths. BBa Recently a fly-paper manufacturer has mnde a trce-tanglcfoot ralxturo, BKJ nnd with a liberal samplo furnished BAb by tho firm, several of tho Infested elm trees wero treated. Ono treo was more than two feet In diameter and tho bark was very rough. It took soy oral pounds of tho tanglefoot to make a complete band six or eight Inches wldo nround tho trunk, several feet from tho ground. The application was, mndo on March 15, Just beforo the moths began "running" up tho trees. B&J Great masses or tho wingless fe- B&J malo moths woro found March 31 on tho lowor odgo of tho sticky band, and thousnnds or flying males woro caught all over tho band. A row females BKJ were able to get over tho band whero BVJ dead males had formed narrow bridges across tho tanglefoot. Sovornl pints BftJ or many thousands of tho females BBJ wero caught and killed by tho band BV on this ono largo troc. As each fe- mnle may lay 200 or moro eggs, the treo was rcllnvcd from feeding bun- nrcds or thousands or cntiKer-worma bhj In May, Tho oxperlmont was thus n striking success and has furnished a valuablo object lesson." BH Yes, nnd It should furnish a useful jB object lesson to tho farmer. The H spring spring canker-worm often nt- BJ tncks other trees besides elms apple mdK trees, for lnstnncu. If tho tnnglefool lHVfi preparation Is not readily obtainable, jHtfl other Btlcky substances may bo used. SJh Tar, printers' Ink, thick molasses, XfV blrd-llmo, or bands or fly-papor, ar all moro or less usoful for tho pur If fly-paper Is used, remombor that It should bo at least flvo Inches wide, Wtft nnd must tit close to tho bark. On Sli rough-bark trees, tho bark must either be scrapod smooth whore tho band It ?! to go, or all depressions must bo filled Vfttfl with clay or putty, bo as to mnko a wift smooth surfacs on which to faston tin K'ff etlcky band.
