He knew that when he showed it at security, as he would be required to do, that it would immediately be confiscated, He knew he couldn't get his bags back to load it into his checked luggage. John's mind whirled as he tried to figure out what he could do. As he was considering his options, he passed the airport bookstore. That gave him an idea.' • He went into the store and looked around. He found a section that had some text books. Among them was a college algebra book. He pulled it from the shelf and, making sure no one was looking, he placed the knife into the center of it. He then carefully placed the book back on the shelf. He went through security and checked In without incident. He caught his flight and was gone for two weeks. When he returned, and his flight was landing, the only thing he could think about was. his knife. He made his way quickly ' through the airport, and even 'before hcTweni to pick up his luggage, he hurried to the bookstore. He found the algebra book in exactly the same position where he had placed it. He pulled it from the shelf and. opened it. and to his great Joy, he found that his pocket knife was still there. In the whole two weeks that he had been gone, no one had even touched that book. "So, you see," John said, finishing his story, "a math text truly does have a use."
