For tha express purpose of alarming tha members of tha dominant rhureh and inducing tnem to vote tha Kepub-tita- n Judicial ticket, a number of willfalseful, malicious and deliberate hoods are being circulated throughout the city and county. While wa cannot believe that anyone will permit tbamaelvea to be swayed one way or tha other by these false rumors, we ask that tip) members of all parties who are Intent upon supporting the Democratic Judicial ticket, pay no attention to statements that may bs sprung at the eleventh hour by the opposition. In some sections of the county the reports ban been circulated to the effect that the election of Charles C. Richards as Judge will mean tho expansion of the American" party in Weber county. Thin statement is one of the weakest and must groundless of any yet circulated in behalf of tbs Republican nominee for Judge. Thu tact that a great many of tho moot intelligent Republicans are supporting Air. Richards fur tha position, should In Itself brand this cry as fulse In every respect. The American" purty is already in Weber county and lias a county ticket as well as a stats ticket In the field. How then can the election of Mr. Richards have anything to do with furthering that cause 7 It has been proven elsewhere, and the same applies here, that the Republican party alone is responsible for the organisation of the ''American" party. The circulation of this reiairt is merely another method adopted by the Republicans In tne vain hojie of offsetting tlie election of Mr. Richards. In the city the gum-sho- e element of the Republican party have been at work for some time circulating the report that the Democrats and tha American" party had funned a combination. This report is Just as falsa as the other circulated about what the result of the elec ton of Mr. Richards would mean. It is difficult to understand how the Republicans hops to reconcile the two statements. We do not know who is responsible for the circulation of these reports, but ws Insist that whoever It Is. they well know that the rharges are absolutely untrue. The latest report however, la to the effect that church influence is being used to bring about the election of Mr. Richards. Like the other statements, this is also an absolute falsehood and circulated with the same view as the others, namely, that of winning a few votes from the Democratic Judicial ticket It Is nut at all surprising that these reports are being circulated. In fact Ihe Democratic camjialgn managers have been expecting Just such work as this for some time. The truth of tha matter Is, that the Republicans find that their Judicial ticket has no earthly show of being elected, and they are willing to resort to anything that might possibly sway a few votes from the Ikmocratlc column. The action of those responsible for this kind of work la In a direct line with the methods employed in other parts of the state. It la doubtful If the court house ring ever did create an original idea, and certain It Is that they have not done so In this case. Is it any wonder that, the ring boosters have become so desperate In the last days of the campaign? The The defat of Judge Howell and N. J. Harris Is certain, and Judge Howell Is the head of the court house ring. Ia striking at the head of the machine you likewise strike at the heart and the defeat of Judge Howell will do more toward breaking up the ring than the defeat of any other one candidate on the Republican ticket. elnally the Democratic party of this county. Its managers or lesdirs denounce all such reports ss those referred to In this article as being wilful and mallcluus falsehoods and ask the voters to rebuke at the polls such disreputable methods as are being resorted to at this time bjr those, who think more of a few petty offices than they do of tie welfare of the The financial condition of the ReIs a publican campaign committee matter of general comment.' According to reliable reports their bills are not fully paid and a request for an extension of credit has been made. Is It true that the financial resources of the committee are so badly demoralised that a second assessment has been levied?- - Is It true that since the legislative candidates hv privately declared for the local option Issue and thus double crossed the saloon element that the liquor and gambling interests have withdrawn their financial support? Evidence seems to be conclusive that this is true. When voting the Democratic ticket look for the Rooster. It Is to be found on the fourth lever of the Wonder If the county is paying the salary of Carl Allison as a deputy In the sheriff's office while he Is working for the Republican Interests as secretary of the Republican county central committee? The county has been paying Clerk David Mattsons salary for the past eighteen months while he has been conducting a real estate office In the basement of the First National bank building. CANDIDATES HANDICAPPED The Republican Judicial candidates have arrived at the point In the campaign where each considers that he Is handicapped by the other. Judge Howell Is whispering to his friends that he Is handicapp-- d In having to carry Harris. his running mats on the Judicial ticket On the other hand Harris Is telling hs intimate friends that tha unpopularity of Judge Howell is hurting his chances of election. We cheerfully agree with both of them and are of the opinion that the whoie Republican ticket is handicapped bv both. It reminds one of the parable of the two snakes which engaged in mortal combat, each seising the other by the tall with the purpose of swallowing him. The swallowing process kept up until both of them entirely disappeared. Alike fate awaits both Harris and Howell mxt Tuesday, 190S. tha court house ring, should ass tc It that not only their voles, but tha votes of their friends should be cast for tha Democratic candidates at tha coming election and thua rebuke the machine for tbe high hand It has been playing In local politics.
