Steyer will receive 50 more ar-n- s We quote the following from a recent issue of the Herald: Does not the Nation know that in every state in the union in which the punishment for murder is death there is a life imprisonment alternative? The Nation does know this, and it also knows something of mur-'de- r trials in states where the death penalty is -- inflicted. A man commits a murder; he is indicted and tried for murder in the first degree, a crin.e punishable with death. Now, there is no question, but that there is great horror in the public mind at taking life, even judicially, and this sentiment ngainst the on the Pacific law begins to operate as soon as the murder is committed. On account of this public sentiment against the law of blood, a strong effort is made to screen and save the murderer. Say what fact the you will, remains, that witnesses dislike to testify, juries to convict, and judges to sentence, when the life of s man is at stake. Sympathy ai.d pity B. Y. The Herald evidently believes that the frequent mis carriage of justice In cases of ' murder. is due largely to legal technicalities which are taken advantage of by the defendents counsel. We quote again from the Herald. In Utah especially there has been a growing sentiment that the criminal laws are so framed that 'lie execution of a murderer is practically impossible. The sentiment has been created by a long list of acquittals, commula- tions. and light sentences, due ocal Notes. lMbrS.nlrr aD President Roosevelt be in a bad boot. He " . 7- ght,--n,fS- ty. The opponent of capital punishment believes that the real cause of these acquittals,, commutations, and light sentences, is the fact that in every state id the union there exists a: strong sentiment against the State committing judicial murder We reiterate, ,U1.. oirhas no r wiseVltb inflict thefldeath'ttfnar . seems to i mined that Parry Hath shall go on account of the postal frauds; Mark Hanna says no, and threatens a politics) etorm in the Republican party.
