Show THE TWO POSITIONS. A Correspondent Who Scores Three for Bishop John Sharp. The News still continues its miserable drivel about the terrible sin of John Sharp. Let us briefly, and without prejudice, preju-dice, look at the case. The sentiments expressed by John Taylor to Mr. Pierre-pont, Pierre-pont, and afterwards in the Tabernacle, and the statement of Bishop Sharp in the Third District Court, are so nearly alike that the News can find but little difference so far as the words are concerned. What then is it that puts the News into such a terrible rage? Let us see. When John Taylor made his statement he well knew that his example would have a vast influence on his followers; still; in giving , his submission to law he made no demur. . Bishop Sharp on the other hand, though a man -of much' less ecclesiastical influence, gave the Court and the public to understand that, while he detested the law, still he would be submissive to it "until an over-ruling Providence shall decree greater religious toleration in the land," thereby recognizing recog-nizing one . of the fundamental Mormon doctrines, that the saints, even as the gods, must learn to be submissive to law before they can "be prepared to execute law. Score one for John Sharp. Again, when- John Taylor made his statement there was no one to chide him. He was a law unto himself. When Bishop Sharp made his statement he well knew that his conduct would be open to criticism criti-cism and fanatical persons would not hesitate to denounce him ; still he preferred pre-ferred to follow his conscience. Score two for John Sharp. Still again, when Bishop Sharp made his statement he made it honestly, and honorably he will keep his promise. Even his enemies will admit that. When John Taylor made his statement, it was done dishonestly and to deceive the government; govern-ment; for is it not true that in less than two months afterwards he had - taken another wife, and had received a pretended pre-tended revelation that certain persons could hold a certain clas3 of offices only on condition that they would become polygamists. Score three for John Sharp and still he has the innings. He is showing show-ing to the Mormon people the path of honorable rectitude instead of dishonorable dishonor-able prevarication and falsehood which his detractors have so long followed. |
