Show FRAUDS AGAINST UNCLE SAM. Over lOO Arrests Hade the Last Year for Counterfeiting His Legal Coin. - Washington, November 18. The Chief of the Secret Service Division, in his annual report to the Solicitor of the Treasury, shows that during the last fiscal year 4M arrests were made by operatives of the service, assisted by local officers, a large majority of which were for passing, dealing in or manufacturing counterfeit, money. The amount of counterfeit money captured during the year was $305,508, mainly in flash notes." A large ajnount'f"' plates,-dies, "moulds and counterfeiting material- was seized and destroyed. The Chief of the Division expresses the opinion that there are now in the hands of counterfeiters about $100,000 in bad money of the following character: char-acter: Twenty-dollar silver certificates; $10 U. S. notes; $10 notes on the Third National Bank of Cincinnati, and $5 U. S. notes. It also speaks of the good results of the law for the punishment punish-ment of persons who counterfeit foreign money and securities. The report also says that while the counterfeiters of paper money have been unusually active during the past year, they have been generally successful in their efforts to float the results of their work. Recommendation is made for legislation prohibiting the making of dies or moulds for making fac similies for business purposes of United States coins, and another for legislation legisla-tion to extend the powers of the service so as to include authority to act in all cases of frauds against the government. |
