Show . ' OFF ON A CRUISE. The "Sanger" and "Thetis" to Correct Some Surveys of the . North and South Pacific. Washington, November 18. Commodore J. G. Walker, Chief of the Bureau of Navigation, Navi-gation, in his annual report to the Seoretary of the Navy, submits estimates for $130,000, for the support of the bureau during the next fiscal year. It is proposed that the "Ranger" shall be employed in sounding in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Lower California and Mexico and in examining the North Pacific Ocean for rocks and shoals which have been reported in the track of vessels. The old surveys of the coast of the Spanish main are known to contain many errors, and it is proposed pro-posed that the "Theits" shall be used to make the surveys necessary to correct them. Upon the completion of this duty, the report re-port continues, the "Thetis" should be sent to the South Pacific to examine many dangers dan-gers to navigation reported to exist in that section, the existenco of which has in many cases not been proved. Comodore Walker strongly recommends an increase in the clerical force engaged in classifying and copying the naval reports of the war for publication. He submits as appendices reports re-ports of the heads of the several divisions of his bureau and calls attention to -their recommendations. . |
