Show To the Belief of the "Amethyst." Washington, December 28. In response to urgeut telegrams from Senator Fair, the Secretary of the Treasury has decided to send a search party after the missing whaler "Amethyst," supposed to have been cast away in Bearings sea. Telegrams were sent to Commander Hooper of the revenue steamer steam-er "Rush," and Commander Healy of the "Corwin," at San Francisco,' directing them to confer together with a view to the select tion of one of these vessels to undertake the search. It is believed, that the steamer will be ready to sail in four days after the selection is made. Tha "Rush" is a- new vessel, comparatively speaking, but the "Corwin" is in good repair, re-pair, and only last summer returned from a cruise through the waters where it is supposed sup-posed the "Amethyst" was cast away. From advices received from San Francisco it is believed be-lieved that it will not be possible to force a passage further north than Seal islands, between be-tween 150 and 2C3 miles north of the Aleutian 1 islands, and well up into the Bearing sea. The relief steamer will put in at Ounalaska for coal and such stores as may be needed |
