Show GUILTY OF A BASE CRIME. A One-Armed Scoundrel Who Will Probably Get A Heavy Benefit. Robert 'Weston, the one-armed wretch who attempted to commit rape on little Louise, the 4-year old child of Druggist Nelden, appeared in court to-day with his attorney, E. T. Sprague, for trial. Weston pleaded not guilty, and prosecuting prosecut-ing attorney, C. S. Varian, conducted the cinching process. . A jury was formed froni the regular panel. "William A. Nelden, John Wickel, John W. Wickel and Samuel Stone were called as witnesses for the prosecution. ' r Defendant Weston testified in his own . behalf, and claimed to have been under the influence of liquor when he lead the little girl into the closet off Commercial street. During all the sickening account of the horrible affair no ladies were allowed present in the court-room. Mr. Nelden could not refrain from showing his worked-up feelings over the assault of the tramp on his little daughter, daugh-ter, and during the testimony his face j depicted wretchedness, although he sat quietly without saj'ing a word. The appearance in court of the sweet child caused many expressions of contempt con-tempt for the brute who was so low and degraded as to attempt to defile such a little, innocent. The prosecution rested and the jury retired, and at 2 o'clock the twelve men were brought into court and rendered a verdict of guilty as charged in the indictment. Sentence was fixed for next Thursday, and Weston was returned to the school provided for such culprits. |
