Show I SUICIDE ON A MOUNTAIN I Put a Bullet Through His Heart inSight in-Sight of His Wife The citizens of Shenandoah PaJ are becoming alarmed over the large number num-ber of suicides occurring there Two months ago two Polanders hung themselves them-selves to the rafters of the garret which they slept Two weeks later Miss Jennie Yarnell an accomplished and highly esteemed young lady committed suicide by shooting herself through the heart dying instantly At noon the other day Charles Dyer a prominent i i citizen and shute boss at the Philadelphia i and Reading Coal and Iron Companys West Shenandoah colliery died by his I own hand on the Ringtown mountain j This victim of selfdestruction went to I that place one year ago and after acting as bartender and waiter at the Merchants hotel for some time resigned his position and entered the mines He became a I general favorite and although comparatively compara-tively unknown in this section was subsequently sub-sequently promoted to shute boss He i I was a quiet and unassuming man and i I soon made hosts of friends I Among the marriageable and aristocratic aristo-cratic ladies of the town was a Miss Lizzie Warneck who was occasionally seen in Dyers company They became devoted and affectionate lovers and their constant companionship created considerable gossip gos-sip in the neighborhood The day of their nuptials was subsequently named and three weeks ago they were made man and wife A house was furnished and after their wedding trip they went immediately to housekeeping They became be-came unhappy if they were out of each others company for an hour Two weeks ago however Dyer became melancholy and finally grew ill He quit work last Wednesday and notwithstanding he received re-ceived every attention there was no improvement im-provement He arose early one morning and feeling stronger than usual walked around the house until noon when he called his young wife to his side Placing I his arms around her neck he kissed her half a dozen times and remarked they II j were the last she would ever get from I him and slowly moved away saying I Itl will wave to you from the hillside darling He was in the habit of joking I and the unsuspecting bride watched him i until he reached an elevated point on the i Ringtown mountain Here he stood on I I a rock and to several young ladies who i I were passing said j t I am going to do it now Then standing erect he waved his handkerchief I handker-chief to his wife who stood at the door j watching him He drew a revolver placed it before his breast deliberately II fired and fell dead Mrs Dyer saw him fall and her I screamssoon brought out the neighbors I who an excitedly to the scene and found I he unfortunate man breathing his last He was soon removed to his home where I he bride of a few weeks knelt by the i I bedside of a dead husband beseeching him to tell her why he took his own life I but there was no response She became almost crazed with grief and had to betaken taken away Different theories are advanced as to he cause of the rash act but it has leaked out that Dyer was a married man having a wife and four Children at Potts I yule and that legal steps were about toe > to-e taken against him by Mrs Dyer No 1 He was evidently notified of this fact which so preyed on his mind that rather than suffer exposure he chose to die by his own hand The most profound sym athy is expressed for the youthful bride and widow who is but 19 years of ago |
