Show NO TROUBLE ASSURED The whim of Marshal Philips and his fellowmourners on the Fourth turned out to be a much inure Serious matter I than they possibly anticipated at the time and the result of it has been to put the country in a fever of excitement and which is not yet allayed Whether any programme was mapped out for the Twentyfourth cannot now be learned but the doings of the Fourth were such as to give rise to rumors concerning such a programme and to justify the belief with many that the programme was such as would be liable to bring about a collision between the Mormons and Gentiles It is always impossible to say whether a rumor in Utah has any foundation or not because all things hereof here-of any importance or momentare always arranged in secret and ostensible leaders are in reality but actual followers doing as they are directed A denial of a rumor can only be accepted ipon its probability All know full well what the rumors concerning con-cerning the Twentyfourth were and all well know that President Cleveland has sent instructions to the military to be ready to move at a moments warning if any hostile demonstrations were to be made here on the Twentyfourth The rumors and the instructions of the President Presi-dent have at last succeeded in arousing some of the leading men of the Peoples party to a realization of affairs and yesterday yester-day Bishop John Sharp chairman of the Peoples party Hon John T Caine Delegate to Congress and Mayor James Sharp waited upon His Excellency Governor Murray and had an interview inter-view with him concerning affairs here and it is presumed as to what if any were his instructions from Washington in regard to the Twentyfourth After this they waited upon General McCook the Commandant at Fort Douglas Of the nature of the interviews nothing definitely is known but the Governor is reported to have said that in his opinion there is now no reason to expect any disturbance dis-turbance here on the Twentyfourth It would be interesting to know whether the Governor thought there was any reason to expect a disturbance here on the Twentyfourth before the interview of yesterday If he did what assurances assur-ances did the gentlemen who called upon him give himJ And if they gave him any it would be far more interesting inter-esting still to know by whose authority they gave them These gentlemen certainly cer-tainly must have been aware of the unquiet un-quiet feeling of the community arising from those rumors and why did they not sooner act in the interest of quiet order and peace J If those gentlemen on their own responsibility had publicly announced an-nounced through the press or otherwise other-wise that there was no possibility of any disturbance acre on the Twentyfourth such an announcement would have done very much towards restoring calm and confidence Their assurance is better late than never for such we take their interview inter-view to be but it would have been far more beneficial in its effect had it come ten days or a fortnight ago It will be impossible for them to escape the suspicion suspi-cion that they like Governor Murray and General McCook were acting under orders |
