Show SPRAGUE BOUND OVER Remanded to Jail In Default of 8400 Bonds The trial of P D Sprague charged with stealing a watch from the late W A Douglass was up for hearing in the Police Court late yesterday afternoon The prosecution opened its case with the introduction of the testimony of J YY Taylor the undertaker who brought Douglass body to the city after the I death He testified that he asked Sprague whether or not there was anything any-thing on Douglass person which had not been turned over and received a negative nega-tive answer There was other evidence introduced to show that the defendant had denied having the watch in his possession pos-session Sprague the defendant testified that the deceased gave him the watch early in the evening and asked him to take care of it for him When Taylor asked him that question he did not think of the watch and did not notice it until it fell out out of his pocket as he was undressing to get into bed The next day he claims that lie went to the Coroners office three i times but could not find him Herbert Slade the Maori testified that he did not see the watch until the time of the inquest in-quest while another witness swore that he had seen Sprague wearing the watch at 8 oclock on the evening of Douglass death The case was then submitted and the court took the matter under advisement until 10 oclock this morning when it was decided to hold Sprague in the sum of 400 to await the action of the Grand Jury Being unable to give bail the defendant was remanded to the custody of the city marshal I |
