Show I MORE ATTEMPTED CITIZENS Tryliiff to Slip Through Judge len dersons JUill Several more Mormons were before Judge Hendersonlhis afternoon trying to pass through the examination for citizenship citizen-ship without making promises for the future J W Stumpp and Charles H Morris answered the questions all right and were accepted Brother Berg then went forward but could not promise that ho would not at some future time obey the divine principle He was excused Neils M Jacobson followed and met with the same fate John Long was accepted William Sherwood got along nicely with his answers until it came to promising promis-ing that ho would not at any time in the future obey the polygamy revelation On this ho said he was willing to promise to obey all the laws of his country but he would not promise never to embrace polygamy William Stoneman showed himself thoroughly qualified for citizenship and was accepted Qeorge Willis started out by asserting that he believed in all the laws of his country and was attached to them and then startled the Court by saying that he believed in polygamy When asked whether1 he believed in the law against polygamy1 answered Wo have to submit Q Yes but dont you believe the law wrong A I believe that it is wrong inasmuch as it interferes with my belief Q Are you willing to take an oath that you will never obey the polygamy revelation A I am willing to take an oath that I will obey all the laws of my country Upon close questioning it was found that the young man was unwilling to say that he would not steal in the future and as our report closed his chances for voting at the next election seemed very slim |
