Show The Good Work Working ED OF DEMOCRAT l An interesting and characteristic letter appears in the Salt Lake Herald of this morning with the caption Youth and 4 Age The writer is evidently intelligent t intel-ligent man and fully appreciates one or 4 two planks of the platform made by the Young Democratic party He tells a tale that proves the absolute necessity of our organization that the young men and old of Utah may be free from the thral dom which characterizes the condition oft of-t society where Church and State are united Nay more he shows that the f I ti dominant party in Utah refuses to learn 1 the lufons of the day and will compel men young men and progressive minds to obey the dictation and dominance of church rule The progressive element of Brigham i City having felt for years that the old fogy reign of bishop and priesthood retarded re-tarded their progress and curbed the 4 noblest energies of their nature by censuring S cen-suring their laudable ambition to effect a i I change in the government of their city t St I endeavored to nominate and elect men of brains and nerve by which they might bin I I b-in accord with the progression of the age Not only did the old wornout incapa S bles frustrate the design and purpose of the younger portion of the population but they abused them with their priestly twaddle and held them up to the public I r derision on Sunday the meeting It is S certainly time that our young men should I take an honorable part in our city and J J territorial government and that their I voices should be heard and their suggestions r sugges-tions treated with respect It is a lamentable lament-able state of thingsoften witnessed in I S our Territorythat men high minded S menjrcannot meet on political grounds i I discuss questions of rights duty and privileges without being insulted and made subjects of priestly denunciation on the Sabbath day If men professing to be religious had the true spirit of their calling they would avoid making the actions and discussions at a political caucus texts for Warming the ears of the young patriotic citizens and the topics of discourse in a religious I S assembly Nay if the priesthood was manly it would refrain from attacking i persons in a place where they are prevented I vented from talking back or defending their course But our young men once aroused will continue to agitate and assert I sert their just rights as American citizens citi-zens and real lovers of their Territory S despite thefutile anathemas of the enemies ene-mies of freedom i S There is a great reason for the uprising I of our citizens that their love of country f I and its laws may be maintained and weS we-S may shake off the disgrace of bondage and thraldom that we have suffered too long All honor to our Brigham City i jl l men Let them agitate agitate andS and-S work for their rights like men like citizens t j citi-zens of a grand country Ye want their cooperationwe must visit them and 1 4 convert the oppressors 5 4 Hereditary bondsmen know ye not who would be free themselves must strike the blow DEMOCRATUS 4 5 |
