Show LOWERING RECORDS pura c ISoS Wonderful Atli iciic Performances in San Francisco A large crowd composed mostly athletics and newspaper men assembled it Central Park yesterday afternoon says the k1fl Francisco AltaCalifornia of the 17th to see Duncan C Ross make an attempt to break the records in hammer and weight throwing by Davidson and Puffy of Scotland both of whom last June beat the best records made by Ross On this being telegraphed from Scotland Richard K Fox of New York made a wager with David Conachie of Aberdeen that Ross would in turn lower these rec ord and yesterdays contest was the result re-sult of that wager The Judges were D A McDonald Andrew Foreman Daniel McLeod W P Stout and D R McNeill Ross appeared on the ground stripped to i the waist and looking the perfection of physical manhood He was accompanied hr J Carroll who has been his trainer and mentor in his various contests The 1irt trial was throwing the 16pound hammer the best record up to yesterday being 10i feet made last June by David r M3D of Aberdeen Scotland beating beat-ing Ross previous record of 100 feet 2 1 j inches On the second attempt I yesterday Ross made the wonderful throw of 108 feet 2 inches thus beating the record by 6 feet 2 inches In throw uij the light hammer weighing twelve pounds he was equally successful casting cast-ing the leaden ball the distance of 131 feet 0 inches the best record heretofore having been that of Davidson US feet inches Davidsons best throw with the twentyonepound hammer 79 feet was also easily beaten Ross landing it a distance of 82 feet 3f inches In putting put-ting the sixteenpound weight Ross met his first and only defeat for he failed to beat the record of Owen Duffy of Aberdeen Aber-deen which is 43 feet 41 inches Ross bpsi attempt yesterday was 42 feet 73 indIes Davidsons record in throwing the fiftysixpound weight 26 feet 1 inch was beaten by Ross who covered a distance dis-tance of 26 feet 6 inches The weights and hammers were all carefully weighed before the contest by a committee of newspaper men and athletes and the throws were closely measured by the judges so that there is no chance for caviling or questioning the fact that Mr Ross is today the champion allround weight tluower of the world |
