Show Hearst and InterState ST Louis April 2GSenator Hearst of California is in the city He was asked in his opinion what would be the effect of the InterState Commission law on Business Busi-ness in California JJe said rnyojmion always has been that it would be very detrimental and l would be specially injurious to us as it militated against a cheap long1 haul and we Californians have the longest haul in the country I i think however that the law is highly benificlal to the country at large and it need not be particularly injurious to California if the railroads act in proper manner The object of the Commission is to do good and not harm members are earnest and intelligent and if railroads will only endeavor to obey the law and not attempt to raise obstacles to its enforcement enforce-ment or to evade it all will go well as they are given very large latitude and I can alter the application of a statute to suit the circumstances of each particular case But if the roads endeavor to antagonize antago-nize and hamper the Commission they will be dealt with in very summary fashion as both the President and Commission Com-mission are determined the law shaH be obeyed |
