Show I CONSOLIDATION OF STRENGTH I The registration is closed and the re Hult although not what it should be in theTerritory is far better than the friends f of free government had reason to expect a few weeks ago Tin is especially the case in this city where during the last week a large number of hesitating Gentiles Gen-tiles finally yielded to tho impulse of patriotism and determined to perform their duty as American citizens Tun DEMOCRAT flatters itself that it assisted materially in enlarging the loyal representation on tho lists to their present proportions and it will until tho closing of the day of election use its utmost ut-most endeavors to create and foster such harmony in the antiMormon ranks as will inure to the benefit of the common cause Unity and harmony har-mony are the necessary elements to render effectual at the polls such strength as is represented upon the registration lists and the policy which will best consolidate that strength is the one which should bo adopted There appears to be a general recognition of the wisdom of dividing the nominations in the districts where success is robable or possible equally or proportionately between the two great National parties to one or the other of which nearly every loyal voter of the Territory belongs There is no denying deny-ing the fact that party feeling jealousy and perhaps prejudice are the rocks which are the most likely 1 to shatter shat-ter the loyal craft anlit beli es the Gentile political managers to adopt such a chart as will enable them to steer clear of those dangerous shoals Every possible possi-ble precaution should be taken to avoid the incitement of partisan feeling which is i certain to crop out upon any appearance appear-ance of partiality in the selection of candidates upon the antiMormon tickets To avoid even the semblance of thisshould be the policy of those who are sincere in there professions of such fealty to tho common curse as to seek no partisan advantage in their manifestation of it In this city there is a certainty of electing two members of the House and one Councilman with perhaps a fighting chance for another member mem-ber if ordinary prudence and a spirit of fairness are exercised in making the nominations The second and fifth precincts elect each a member and the two combined a Couccilman Each of these precincts has a handsome Gentile Gen-tile majority and nothing except the grossest mismanagement can prevent the election of the loyal candidates The two members of one party and the Councilman Coun-cilman of tho other would in our opinion bean equitable distribution and upon that basis the arrangement will in all probability be made TJII DEMOCRAT has been informed from what it considers a reliable source that certain persons of one political party have already taken it upon themselves to name the three candidates designating the Democratic nominee as well as those of their own party That they are acting without authority from their own political organization is perhaps no affair of ours except as it affects detrimentally tho common cause Speaking however for the Democrats of this city and from knowledge obtained from personal expression ex-pression of a large number of representa live members of unquestionable devotion devo-tion to the loyal cause we are justified in the assertion that if such arrangement is entered into the Democrats will insist upon naming their own man or men Wo make this statement not as a threat nor in a factious spirit but in the interest oj the loyal cause and at the request re-quest of a number of the gentlemen to whom we have above alluded It is conceded con-ceded upon all sides that an equitable division should be made between the two parties This being acknowledged no valid reason can be urged why each party tho basis of distribution having been agreed upon should not select their own candidates to be placed upon the fusion tickets That is the only method by which the end sought by such division can be accomplished It is the only one which will bring out a solid and united Gentile vote and it is the policy which should be adopted If tho Democrats have the naming of the Republican representatives upon the tickets or vice versa the candidates might as well be of one political party so far as allaying partisan feeling is concerned Tho Republican Territorial Committee at its last meeting passed a resolution to the effect that a consultation should bo had with the Democratic Committee to consider con-sider the best means to be adopted for L the consolidation of the antiMormon vote We have never heard that steps have beetftaken to carry into effect the resolution It was a gracious act upon the part of tho Republican Republi-can Committee and should be accepted ac-cepted in good faith by the Territorial Territo-rial representatives of the Democracy Let a meeting be held and such recom niendations made as will best tend to promote harmony and insure the consolidation consol-idation of the loyal vote in tho different precincts in the Territory If such spirit of prudence fairness and wisdom prevails pre-vails as we have reason to expect the policy which we have outlined will be recommended |
