Show WE learn from the Ogden Herald that they have had a municipal election at Brigham City which was not conducted with graveyard quietness The fact is the Utah Democratic Club has stirred a spirit of independence which can no longer be held in check The young men of the Territory out of respect to their fathers and spiritual guardians are severally sev-erally making their first effort within the caucuses of the Peoples party but they have troubled the waters and will not easily quiet down Of course the old leaders of the party are too much for them and they were beaten in Brigham just as they were in Ogden but the effort has done them good and they will never again rest quietly under the yoke of the priests The best thing the young men of Brigham and Ogden can do is to join the Democratic Clubs and freely discuss dis-cuss first principles Heretofore they have obeyed counsel and left their thinking to others The Ogden Herald teaches that independentpoliti cal action would be unnecessary if men understood each other properly and kept in view the unity biotheihood and free i dcm which should characterize every LatterDay Saint with the interest of the Kingdom of God at heart But what 0 has the Kingdom of God got to do with the question of who shall be mayor of Ogden or Brigham Has a man no rights in Utah if he does not belong to the Kingdom of God And if all human rights are thus limited who has the keys I of the kingdom and on what terms can common sinners get in The position taken by our Ogden cotemporary raises a host of questions in the discussion of none of which do we wish to be irreverent irrever-ent but we are not used to carrying our church membership into ward caucuses No other church known k under the American Amer-ican government presumes to go into the elections politics as a unit and work solely for its own advantage |
