Show SANK AT SEA The White Cross Ocean Steamer ner Hel vetia Goes Down in the Gulf luickily Her Passengers Are Saved by an Allan Ocean Liner I Four Wrecks in Four Years for the I White Cross Line Wreck of the Helvetian HALIFAX May nThe White Cross Line Belgian steamer Helvetia with a general cargo which started from Antwerp Ant-werp April 23d for Montreal sank off Scatterie Cape Breton Saturday This is the fourth steamer of that line which has been lost within as many years The steamer August C Andre sailed from New York for Antwerp and was never heard of In the fall of 1883 the Herman Her-man Ludwjg sailed from Montreal for Antwerp with a crew of thirty men and a valuable cargo and that was the last heard of her Only thirteen months ago the Daniel Steinmann crashed on the rocks at Sambro Island and one hundred and twentyfour lives were lost The Helvetia makes the fourth vessel that has met with disaster A rather remarkable I remark-able coincidence is that Captain Schoon haven who commanded the Daniel I Steinmann was also in command of the Helvetia and this was the first 1 passage across the Atlantic which he has I made since the wreck of the Steinmann 1 The Helvetia arrived in the Gulf of St I Lawrence over a week ago and has been knocked about in the ice for seven or eight days Her bows were stove in and I she was otherwise damaged by ice She was leaking badly on Friday Captain Schoonhaven left Cape Ray and bore up for Sydney having all he could do to keep the ship afloat On Saturday a heavy sea sprang up and he hailed the ocean line steamer Arcadian which was pass I ing The Arcadian took the Helve I tia in tow and headed Louisberg hut I had not gone far before Captain Schoon i haven called that he was sinking Boats were lowered and the passengers and I crew got into them as soon as possible but none too soon The last boat hardly got clear before the Helvetia careened I over and sank The steamer Arcadian then put back to the Strait of Canso and I landed the survivors at Port Hawksbury I |
