Show r THE YOUNG CONCERT WliicJi is an An Artistic Success Earnest ol Future Osic The concert last night was well attended attend-ed the parquette and dress and first I circles being well filled with that portion I of our citizens that may be termed society minutes to nine the At about twenty I curtain rose and immediately the choris the stage Mr Young ters came upon I and mounted his pedestal as conductor soon was heard the swelling Chorus sounds of the Pilgrims I Lombardi It was his from Verdis Lombardi I debut Verdis conductor and he led the having com chorus in a very good style them Their rendition plete mastery over than dition was very excellent better was to be expected from amateurs as concerted music whether instrumental or vocal is always much more difficult to render than solos There was very good volume to the chorus and their singing was good The next piece Memory a trio was I well and sweetly sung by Mrs McIntosh Miss Almy and Mr Krouse Following Jane lliSS came Bishops My Pretty by which was sung in very good style Mr M H McAllister Mr McAllistei was not always quite certain of his note and was a little nervous It is a very trying piece to sing and Mr McAllistei is to be complimented on his rendition ol it Perhaps Sims Reeves fame as a it ballad singer rests as much upon < this one I song balad any other and this fact always makes an amateur diffident Next on the came Henry Parkers Jerusalem programme which Mr Young sang in a most excellent manner Perhaps il was better suited to show the compass and quality of his voice than anything qualy else he sang The song borders upon the oratorio that sublimest form of vocal music He has much improved since his last appearance in Salt Lake City and he sings with that style which denotes de-notes culture of the voice and high cultivation vation of the art of singing In singing manner is half and even the best voices without art show to poor advantage Mr excellent and Youngs voice is of excelent quality volume though of more than average not of great volume Mrs Hogles singing of Sullivans Guinevere was very good and her voice though small is very sweet The duet by Mr Mackintosh and Mr Young was well sung and well received With cultivation Mr Mackintoshs voice will improve very much We cannot go into details as to the merits of all the pieces and their rendition rendi-tion but all are to be congratulated Mr Krouse has a very nice tenor voice Miss Grace Almy has a very goodcontralto with good voice and she sang wih very style The Axe Maria by Misses Daisey Wood Grace Young and Crissie Lawson elicited much applause The piece which seemed to most please the audience was the Prayer from Moses in Egypt I would be unjust to apply to the ladies and gentlemen who sang last night the severe standard that is applied to I professionals save to Mr Young and he will meet the requirements but the concert I con-cert last night was a pronounced artistic success and it is sincerely to be hoped that more will be given At some future concert we suggest to Mr Young that he render the quintette from Moses in Egypt I is one of the most beautiful things ever written The concert went along without any hitches or drags and is an affair of which Mr Young may well be proud To Madame Mazzucato Young and Mr McIntyre Mc-Intyre much credit is due for the very able manner in which they accompanied |
