Show f T T SV COMING TO THE FRONT I I Many of the Old Camps Being Inspired With New Life The Favorable Showing That the Stockton Mines Make Leasing and Bonding Going On Will Good Result Correspondence DEMOCTAT Your correspondent having been engaged for the gaged at mining in this district past three months and having seen no notice of the mining operations going on notce forwarding of takes the liberty in this vicinity lberty warding you a few items that will no number doubt be of interest to a large the readers of the DEMOCRAT During the early days of mining in I Utah and until about 1S7G the mining I excitement was at fever heat in STOCKTON OPIIIR AND DRY CANYON And there were large sums of money expended recklessly and a large number of what are termed wildcat claims were disposed of for large sums As a natural investors failed to natual consequence investor faied realize the fabulous profits they fondly hoped for and after losing considerable money through mismanagement and inexperience in-experience quit operations and during the past eight years there has been nothing done in this vicinity except by one company except what poor men without any capital could do in working over dumps and concentrating the ore through hand jiggers From present appearances ap-pearances the future of this vicinity will be prosperous for it will be based on the soundest of all causesreal meritthe profitable working and judicious management manage-ment of the valuable mining interests in this section There are about 100 men employed at mining in Stockton district The principal company is TIE HONERINE Which employs from forty to fifty men a their mine and mill The yield of the mino is forty tons of second class or concentrating con-centrating ore that is worked through their mill and from five to ten tons of first class ore per day The mill cleans about fifteen tons of ore per day that sells at from 40 t 45 a ton The stock of the company is principally held by Cleveland and Boston parties their principal mine is the Honerine or what is better known under the as the Great Basin formerly management of General Conner I is an east and west vein and is no doubt a true fissure the formation is lime and from the ore is in chimneys averaging five to fifteen feet in width and extending extend-ing from fifty to one hundred feet on the course of the vein The ore is raised by an engine through an incline shaft at an angle of 45 degrees which is 900 feet deep but at present this is not being worked below the 700foot level The ore is worked through five levels and the cost of mining and timbering is light The mill is situated at the town of Stockton Stock-ton about one and a hal miles distant from the mine the ore is of an excellent character for concentrating and it is claimed that they work the ore to 85 per cent of the assay value THE CATHERINE MINED MINE-D vned by a Chicago company and worked under lease by Messrs Carter and Robertson is situated just north of the Honerine This is a north and south vein the formation being similar to that of the Honcrine The company have 3xpended about 25000 on this mine and eq > have taken out about 18000 worth of I ore it has been worked for the past four essrs r Iter and yea s under lease by Messrs Cutter and Robertson with but partial success until this present season when they at considerable con-siderable expense opened and relimbered the main working tunnel which had been run on the vein a distance of 500 feet They then extended the tunnel about sixty feet further and opened up a large body of high grade ore the last shipment ship-ment of which sold for 96 per ton They have at present in the face of the level a body of ore six feet in width and improving in quantity and quality as the level extends A raise on the ore body some seventy feet above the tunnel shows a large body of rich ore the grade oi this ore is about the best yet discovered in this district and the facilities for working the mine are firstclass There is no doubt but that Messrs Carter and llobertson will be amply rewarded for their pluck and perseverance which will be gratifying to their numerous friends as they are men who are worthy of the fullest success At present they are employing em-ploying six men but will increase the force this week THE CALUMET Owned by L C Karrick of Salt Lake who is superintendent and manager is employing six men in prospect work There are large bodies of ore in this mine but none is being taken out except i what is necessary in running the levels etc I is rated as a valuable property and the reason why it is not making regular reg-ular shipments I have not discovered Till ARGENT Owned by Kahn Bros and others of Salt Lake is being worked by Preston Co under a lease and bond Seven men are employed and are taking out quite a quantity of good grade ore they feel quite elated with the present prospects I THE LEGAL TENDER Owned by Mr Tiernan and others of I Salt Lake is worked by Shuttle Bros under lease who are reported as being I well satisfied with their success THE NO YOU DONT Owned by Messrs DeCourcy and Conner is worked by Messrs Osgood aud Morris under lease and bond who have not yet struck ore but are well satisfied with present indications There is quite a I number of other claims being worked in a small way with encouraging success and many of them will no doubt develop into valuable mining properties In my next I will give you an account of what is doing at Ophir and Dry Canyon A large strike is reported as having been made at Ophir
