Show HUNTERS IN THE ROCKIES A Trio of Hoosiers Have a Contest With Three Tame Bear W S AVyman R C McMahon and Chas S Wright of Indiana on their I return from the Rocky Mountains recently recent-ly being asked as to their experience told a very interesting story While in Fairy Pass just ten miles from BullDog Bull-Dog summit they encountered three full grown cinnamon bears It was in the evening and they were nine miles from I camp When they first saw the muscular i mus-cular beasts they were about twenty I rods distant and were carrying game to their den The men thought it a good r opportunity to kill some heavy game and taking aim fired each one selecting a bear One shot took effect in the side of the smallest bear but the other two sportsmen shot wild and missed their marks The small animal rolled over in anguish pawed the dirt and with a mad grin charged on the hunters Each man aimed at the approaching bear and firing fir-ing sent it reeling back never to rise again The two massive bears now came to the rescue of their companion and stopped to caress the bleeding body The gentlemen from Hoosier omdecided that it was about time to get out of the way and started for the camp But they were I not to go in peace The mourning animals I followed them until they reached a small I hut on the side of the mountain where lived a hermit The men stopped at the hut to find that the hears belonged to the proprietor of the hut who caught them when they were cubs and had tamed and trained them He was very much grieved at the death of the youngest bear as it had been his favorite and pet They paid him very handsomely for the lost pet but could not leave the premises until the enraged en-raged brutes which had followed them had been securely chained This was their most exciting and novel experenco while in the mountains and they talked as though they were greatly relieved at being safely homeward bound Bismarck Tribune |
