Show THE Beaver Utonian in an article of I characteristic fairness and moderation ttikoe oooptioii to the prubpectUS issued by the DEMOCRAT on the ground that we imply that freedom of discussion dis-cussion does not exist in Utah If our cotemporary understands the DEMOCRAT to teach that by the operation of law or any other material force freedom of discussion dis-cussion is prohibited here it is undoubtedly undoubt-edly mistaken but perhaps it can realize how freedom of discussion can be restrained re-strained in another way Suppose the editor of the Utonian is a member of a church which teaches that its religious authority extends not only to the preparation prepara-tion of the soul for eternity but also to the interests of the body on earth suppose that church teaches that a man ought not to decide questions of political policy by himself as an individual but rather should follow the councils of priests who themselves are taught through revelations from GOD suppose that in every political social or religious gathering he finds these priests ready with counsel based on revelations rev-elations received from heaven will not the belief that the counsel of his priest is divine prevent him from thinking for himself And if a man entrusts his thinking to another will he discuss the problems of government freely Can our brother of the Ulonian be absolutely free to choose between the political tickets before be-fore him so long as he regards the support sup-port of one of them as a part of his duty to his church Can Utah find a way out of its troubles before the Utah church formally renounces its claim of right to form political party within itself Surely the Democratic party is too large to beheld be-held within sectarian bounds |
