W Canning Globe Weekly News if No matter the degree have ever b been a or you are have have student at you visited the most likely Redwood Campus Campus' Redwood Campus is the most well known and holds the longest tenure as a facility The Redwood Campus Camp is home to not only the schools school's new p president Cynthia Bioteau but also to the Student Body President and the Student Media Center Redwood began its it's storied storied storied sto sto- ried past as lowly little Salt Lake Area Vocational School Although was established in 1947 to aid returning World War II veterans Redwood Campus was not born until 1959 when the Utah State Board for Vocational Education tion purchased a 72 acre farm at South and Redwood Redwood Continued on Page 12 Redwood Continued from front Road Thirty more acres were purchased purchased purchased pur pur- chased over the next decade to complete the land that is now Redwood Campus In 1967 Salt Lake Area Vocational School was renamed Utah Technical College or Utah Tech for short That same year the first classes were held at the Redwood Campus For the first while there were only a few buildings buildings buildings build build- ings the Administrative Building was the college said former Utah Tech student Steve Lee Most general education classes were held in the Administrative Building while more specialized classes were held in buildings like the Construction Trades Building and Automotive Trades Building The first school president president president dent to have an office at Redwood Campus was Jay L L. Nelson who held the presidency from 1949 to 1978 Nelson holds the record for the longest tenure as president president president dent of the college He was replaced by Dale S. S Cowgill in 1979 and he held the position until 1981 In the early years the school focused on vocational vocational vocational voca voca- classes in welding and auto mechanics as well as 16 vocational and technical courses At the time the school only issued Certificates and Associates Degrees for vocational courses By law although 75 percent of courses taught at the college had tobe to tobe tobe be vocational but as more general education classes were added a debate began to grow The debate that arose was over whether the school should be left as a vocational school or be transformed transformed transformed trans trans- formed into a community college With the student population ever increasing at the school it began unavoidable that the school should become a community college Over the next 20 years the school continued to grow and new buildings were being added seemingly seemingly seemingly seem seem- yearly The Calvin Rampton Technology Building Business Building Markosian Library Applied Technology Center and College Center were all added to the campus In 1987 under the direction of then-president then Orville D.
