Show We will not be silenced A i J c r t. t vj w Photo by Jessica Gonzales Rocky Anderson boldly told the crowd We VVe will not be silenced at the rally on May 28 Jessica Gonzales Community Reporter On May 28 hundreds of protesters attended a rally for peace and human rights held at Washington Square in front of City Hall Former Fonner Salt Lake City mayor Rocky Anderson and the High Roads for Human Rights Advocacy Project organized the rally It occurred just a few hours after President Bush landed in Utah earlier that day to raise campaign money for assumed presidential republican nominee John McCain Despite the fact that Utah has remained as a red state that has supported Bush in the past hundreds of protesters came outto out to the rally with signs criticizing the Bush administration as well as as the management nf of the war in hi Iraq Several speakers came to the podium to address the crowd First to speak was Marshall Thompson an Iraqi veteran who had walked the entire state of Utah in protest of the war in Iraq Thompson scolded th the use of torture against suspects of terror which he claims still occurs in inthe inthe inthe the military Kathy Snyder who lost her only son Brian Freeman Freem while serving in Iraq in 2007 exclaimed that her loss was all in the name of an unjust war Daniel Ellsberg criticized the Protest Continued on 1 II 1 1 II I l 1 I 1 i Bush protest rally Continued from A Al 1 current of the war warby warby warby by the Bush administration He released The Pentagon Papers that exposed that the government was lying about the Vietnam War in 1971 Ellsberg claimed that the United States had lost its foundation as a republic and even compared it to ruled Communist-ruled East Germany We do not have a president now who believes or who is told by his lawyers in the White House that he heis heis heis is bound by any law said Ellsberg He is a law to himself Calling the government immoral rights human-rights abusing tyrants and Bush a defrauder Rocky Anderson boldly told the crowd We will not be silenced He remained adamant Ii 1 L L y rte v a f ouA A 4 4 t i r t Photo by Jessica Gonzales Hundreds of protesters came out to the rally with signs criticizing the Bush administration I t J throughout his speech that the government has mislead the American people into an unnecessary war and violated human rights with illegal kidnapping and acts of torture Our president and others of the executive branch have lied to us leading our nation into a war of regression against a country that posed no danger whatsoever to the United States and causing the deaths and injuries to tens of thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis Cheers and applause from the cr crowd wd echoed throughout the night As protester Jarred Estrin held his Bring the troops home sign he felt that Andersons Anderson's speech was empowering and inspiring Rocky has always been vocal against Bushs Bush's actions with Iraq Estrin stated This situation has escalated into something that I or any other citizen shouldn't be proud of Anderson believes the 1 a turnout of protesters was great and gives credit to all those who attended I think the most important point is 1 that everyone of us has a responsibility to stand up against wrong doing And that's what we were doing here today |
