Show Universe makes for a I good time at the movies Erica Guerdon Contributing Writer iler All you need is love At least that is the mantra and of the musical Across the Universe This paced fast-paced trip hippie-trip is based on the music of the Beatles with all of the music sung by the cast of the film of the same name The movie stars newcomer Jim Sturgess as Jude a boy from Liverpool England who goes to the United States to find the sailor father that he had never known There he meets Max Joe Anderson Becoming Jane a rebel in an n Ivy League world and they become good friends Max takes Jude home with him for Thanksgiving where Jude meets Lucy Evan Rachel Wood Thirteen Running with Scissors and while they are both otherwise involved Jude instantly takes a liking to Lucy Max and Jude move to New York where Lucy joins them after her soldier boyfriend is killed in the Vietnam war Lucy and Jude inevitably become closer and give in to their attraction while Max received news that he is going to be drafted into the war As Maxs Max's last hurrah Max Jude Lucy and several others go to the party of f a war-hating war hippies and after a few sips of the party punch they end up on an drug trip that ends on a farm miles away from the city where they meet Mr Kite In an attempt to get out of the draft drift Max swallows several cotton balls that will supposedly show up as a dark spot on his lung lungin in an x In an over- over top the-top scene Max meets with several mechanical- mechanical looking soldiers that put him through a drafting machine not unlike a scene from Pink Floyds Floyd's The Wall Max pulls out anything he can think of that would leave him out of the next shipment to Vietnam Im a dressing cross-dressing homosexual pacifist with witha a spot on my lung he says to the drafting officer after being put through the grueling process of an army physical Afterward despite the admittance Max is literally packaged and stamped to be shipped off otTto to Vietnam This film has an list A-list ensemble cast that includes s 's Bono comedian and actor Eddie Izzard an appearance by Salma Hayek and even more talented newcomers The Beatles' Beatles immortal music mixed with a fresh love story and some psychedelic cinematography makes for pure entertainment |
