W Canning Managing Editor A gunman dressed in a along along along long black trench coat and entered Dawson College in downtown Montreal Quebec Canada during lunch Wednesday and began firing a handgun The gunman who's name was unknown at press time started shooting as he entered the school through the front door and proceeded toward the second floor lunchroom of the college Students thought they only heard firecrackers until the theman theman theman man walked up the stairs randomly shooting at any and all people Police officers on campus heard the gunshots and quickly ran to the cafeteria Witnesses said as the police approached the man he hid behind vending machines and continued to fire at the officers The officers had to duck behind a wall for protection All the while teachers and staff of Dawson College ran through the halls telling students to get out of the building The gunman eventually was killed by police in what they described as a hail o of f gunfire Following the attack 11 people were admitted t to o Montreal General Hospital eight of whom were admitted d de in critical condition and one e young woman died soon n after Names of the victims s have not been released d because next of kin have no nol been notified i 3 Shooting Continued on page 4 j j Jo 11 injured in ih Shooting Continued from page 3 The shooting prompted the evacuation of two shopping centers as well as asa a childrens children's daycare near the college Dawson College was the first speaking English-speaking Canadian junior college in Quebec's network of universities It was founded in 1969 and resides in downtown Montreal Currently students are enrolled in Quebec's largest general and vocational college |
