Show Thayne Center Celebrates 10 Years Stacie Peart Campus Editor During the anniversary celebration celebration celebration cele cele- bration Thayne Center workers stayed busy enco encouraging raging students to volunteer Their volunteer programs aid others atthe atthe at atthe the college and in the surrounding surrounding surrounding surround surround- ing community Thayne Center volunteers rushed around the top floor of the Student Center at the Redwood Campus during the festivities The purpose of this activity of course is to celebrate a decade of service learning and accomplishments said Judd Morgan President Morgan instrumental in the forming of the Thayne Center then recognized that the anniversary celebration was to help students become aware of the service and learning possibilities possibilities that are still available v to tous us The Thayne Center originated ed as part of Alumni office as the Community Service Center In 1995 the Community Service Center became the Emma Lou Thayne Center Betsy Ward the director of the Thayne Center said that they are really honored to be name for Emma Lou and all of the work that she's done In the past ten years students have participated in volunteer projects students have helped with the America Reads program and 19 service- service learning scholars have ed The Thayne Center has even formed groups such as the Alternative Spring Break club so students can volunteer over the long breaks from school Im thrilled Its It's thriving said Emma Lou Thayne about how the Thayne Center has turned out Betsy Ward Vard is a terrific leader and everybody on the staff is so enthusiastic more than anything they have vision Thayne also added looking ahead all of the time and finding new ways to do things to help people and to put students to work in creative ways Its It's a marvelous tion The booths and activities at atthe atthe atthe the celebration gave students ideas on how to volunteer at or in the community Representatives of f many of of the programs working with the Thayne Center were in attendance attendance attendance atten atten- dance at the anniversary cele cele- bration For example nonprofit prof non it organization Hawk Watch International brought information information information tion on how students could sign signup signup signup up to help monitor the status and trends of the raptors They also brought a live falcon so that students could see who See Thayne Center continued on page 4 Thayne Center continued from front they'd be helping DJ from radio also volunteered his time for the Thayne Centers Center's big bash He played music while students wandered around the booths or the grabbed refreshments provid provid- ed Intermountain Therapy Animals participated in the days day's events The volunteers brought their dogs to Therapy animals help those in hospitals because they help relieve the feelings of depres depres- sion Disability Resource Center also had a booth at the Student Center during the cel cel- cel- cel We have our own service as well said Linda Bennett office man man- ager Bennett said that the helps students who need interpreters readers or note takers If theres there's a technology out there to help students with disabilities we have it or we will get it for them Bennett added She mentioned that the helps about 10 percent percent percent per per- cent of the student body at Most students dont don't have visible disabilities So their classmates dont don't even realize that they are getting help The Thayne Centers Center's anniversary celebration allowed students to get information information information mation about volunteering Those who didn't attend the celebration on Tuesday can visit the Thayne Center for more information |
