| Show 0 un r u J Out of Time Cliche on the Rocks with a Twist 4 0 Allen Johnson Contributing Writer This week opens Denzel Washington's Malcolm X Crimson Tide Training Day l latest latest lat lat- at- at est effort Out of Time in which he lie plays Chief Whitlock a small Florida town police chief framed for the murder of his secret married married mar mar- ried girlfriend This film reunites Washington with the same director Carl Franklin who called the shots for Devil in a Blue Bille Dress back in 1995 On the surface and a ways below it Out of Time is nothing we haven't seen many times before Innocent person gets framed for murder runs from cops while trying to prove inno inno- cence So what makes this one different Not that much really but there are a few redeeming qualities One is the eccentric sidekick to Chief Whitlock the medical examiner Chae played by John Billingsley Its It's funny enough just to see a medical examiner wear a tattered hat through the movie with the word Slash embroidered into it There are good moments of banter banter banter ban ban- ter between Washington and Billingsley that give much needed needed needed need need- ed levity to the movie Eva Mendes Training Day 2 Fast Fas 2 Furious Once Upon a 1 T S. S u S k k 44 w i F 4 c 4 g y G q c Photo Courtesy of Eva Mendes and Denzel Washington work together on a homicide case in Out Dut of Time Time lime in Mexico straps on a gun and badge as Detective Alex Diaz Diaz- Diaz Whitlock Whitlock the separated wife of the Chief who is ordered to head up the investigation of the murder She is on screen a lot but just doesn't seem to add much to the drama Denzel's character is somewhat more enjoyable than the norm nonn because he is more human He makes mistakes he cheats he steals he breaks the law and andi i drinks on the job- job someone we can all relate to and a refreshing break from the squeaky squeal clean cop take that Colin Farrell The plot is pretty predictable right up to the end where there is isa isa isa a slight twist maybe not worth of a twist but maybe Better than most daytime TV at any rate for that matter it is probably better than most prime- prime time TV not that its it's hard to be bemore bemore bemore more entertaining than 12 chan chan- nels with 37 reality shows between them Ever notice how none of those have any basis in anything that happens in real life Yeah 3 beautiful girls all fighting over some frat boy wash-up wash for a date- date that happens Of course who am I to make fun funI I cant can't even get one girl for a date Maybe Ill I'll start my own show Who Wants To Date a Film Critic Anyone Now that's reality O |
