Show No More Free Printing for Students Students f Ron Nichols t Contributing Writer Free printing is now a th thing of the past The Markosian Library hopes wasted paper oozing out of recycling bins will also be a thing of the past For those of you who have visited the library in the last two weeks you have seen and probably used Pharaoh the new printing procedure which requires you to pay for every page you print Ryan Harrison estimated the library spent about last year in paper and toner Currently the library uses 70 boxes of paper a month at 25 a box Each box contains around pieces of paper In addition addition addition addi addi- tion to the cost of paper the library also signed a year one-year contract with the company that makes the Pharaoh printing tem The contract costs a couple of hundred dollars for each of the 32 printers the Pharaoh system is hooked up to Students are given free prints to start with After the free copies they'll need to pay two cents for every page printed and students non-students will be charged five cents a page With the recent hike in tuition some students are wondering oJ why they have to pay for print print- ing Actually though only a small percentage of our student fees go to printing Were not making any money off of this said Ryan Harrison of the Markosian Library Not only is the library not profiting they are still losing money Students are given two dollars in free printing but only a dollar is Students are given free prints to start with After the free copies they'll need to pay two cents for every page printed print print- ed and non stu dents will be charged five cents a page allocated from student fees for printing in the library In order to use your free prints you must have a current students Non-students can get a community user usef card from the library desk and apply money to it for printing You can deposit money on your at the ID center courtesy desk and online at http Students dont don't need to worry about their tuition paying for professors professors professors pro pro- and other faculty to print Faculty members wishing to print in the library are considered J community users and are charged 5 s j five cents to print Teachers who have printers in their office get a I certain free amount of paper and 1 toner that is allotted for by the tJ 3 state budget j. j If you paid extra fees for certain certain tain classes in fields such as communication corn com or computer science sCIence then you can print in the labs of those departments at no additional addition- addition J al charge Dr Randal Chase of J the communications department 1 said we collect a class fee and it covers the expendables The f expendables are re paper toner and 1 computer maintenance If you have used your free prints in inthe inthe the library and have paid an additional additional additional addi addi- fee for a class take advantage advantage advantage tage of the department labs to print Student fees are broken down into four categories technology salary for the staff building maintenance and miscellaneous Printing and computer use comes out of the technology fund of student stu stu- student dent fees Ryan Harrison pointed out that the goal of paying to print isto is isto to reduce waste and eventually lower the costs of student fees C i |
