Show Campus Crimes in the Hundreds Liz Livingston Staff Writer When students are asked safe attending a if they are school the answer is overwhelmingly overwhelmingly overwhelmingly over over- yes but statistics may prove otherwise In the past three years there have been crimes committed on Redwood campus alone with the number of some crimes increasing each year Since 2000 there have 13 burglaries burglaries burglaries bur bur- forcibly entering a structure structure structure ture with the intent of theft or to commit a felony nine non- non forcible sex offenses 21 instances of breaking liquor See Crimes on page 3 I t Crimes continued from page 1 laws 24 instances of breaking drug laws and instances of larceny taking another's persons person's persons person's persons person's per per- sons son's property without consent on the Redwood campus Burglary forcible sexual rape offenses and motor vehicle theft are becoming more prevalent prevalent prevalent preva preva- lent each year These statistics may have been part of the firing and rehiring done in May of 2003 when the school contracted with the Utah Department of Public Safety Recent testing done this summer summer summer sum sum- mer by proved the then current security staffs staff's performance perform perform- ance was far less than adequate with an excess of 70 items need need- ing attention Former security employees were not required to under go drug tests polygraph exams or psychological cal testing Although all former employees were graduates of the Police Academy felt the need to fire the entire staff with the option of reapplying under the new policy As of this summer Redwood and South City have newly trained and thoroughly tested police officers at their campuses In addition there are campus I security officers who patrol campus campus campus cam- cam pus from 11 1100 00 pm to am a.m. Though they are out of uniform they are not official peacekeepers and their duties are limited Only time will tell if the new security team will show an improvement over the old But with the increase of crimes like burglary rape and motor vehicle theft the new addition of officer to our campuses may be just what we t need U I |
