Show J c 4 I i J I Tell Me I Can Someone Please e 1 Aaron Zundel Staff Writer Can someone please tell me why the lesbian gay community feels the urge to throw their life choice in everyone's face I dont don't care if you happen to be gay straight somewhere in between heck you can even have a thing for furniture it doesn't matter to me I hope that everyone can choose who they want to be and be that person This is America you get getto to do pretty much whatever you want and I agree with that My problem comes in when people decide to not just let everyone know that they are gay but make sure everyone knows they are by waltzing down Main St. St naked with the exception of a biker hat and some studded black leather strap across their chest Now I will admit that the previous previous previous pre pre- comment was a stereotype but who hasn't seen something i that effect sometime in their to at Nt f fr r life ife America is supposed to be i 4 Photo Courtesy the land of tolerance but Ive I've never seen a bunch of straight people walk down the street in a parade wearing lingerie and groping each other and if they did Im I'm sure the gay community would have something to say about it The reason for a lot of these type of events is to let people people people peo peo- know that you are gay but guess what Nobody cares The second most common rea rea- rea- rea son is to try and be bc a part of the community but the message that I usually hear is not I am gay and want to make that as comfortable for you as ble Its It's more along the lines of HEY IM I'M GAY AND IM I'M GOING TO MAKE YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT WHAT I DO IS GREAT I Iview Iview Iview view this sentiment as incredibly fascist To say that I have to accept what you do but under no circumstance do you have to accept my opinion opinion opinion ion furthermore that you are right and I am a bigot for not wanting to see said naked biker guy What is the difference between this and any number of conservative conservative conservative conser conser- zealots who claim that homosexual are a disease disease disease dis dis- dis- dis ease of the planet There is none This sort of behavior is not helpful in anyway to bridge any sort of gap between the two ties If anything it makes people who are not familiar with it to become alienated and afraid of it Not to mention that nobody likes to be told what or how to think Recently there was a drag show and discussion panel here at the community college put on by the Straight Gay Alliance of Utah The event was completely voluntary voluntary voluntary vol vol- vol- vol unlike said parades that you you cant can't miss and was very non threatening Surprisingly this was the first event that promoted awareness that I felt was actually actually actually actu actu- ally informative and helpful to all parties involved The event was more of a QA session with no preaching at all At no point did I feel like anyone was attacked for any views they might possess At no point did the presenter throw the fact that he was gay in anyone's face either The event turned out tobe tobe to tobe be very informative and constructive constructive constructive con con- for both sides This sort of event and atmosphere should become the blueprint for awareness If people want to know if you are gay then let them ask If people want to know what sort of things gay people do then let them ask Once again I dont don't care if you are gay and if you want to be open about it fine But just as I respect your choices please respect other peoples privacy who dont don't want to be assailed by it itO C |
