Show S Lee Welcomes W e I com e s Globe G lob eRa Radio d i 01 11 Globe Radio makes its way to Salt Lake Community College f after years of work By Tara McMullIn Staff Writer Something exciting has been v brewing in the Mass Communication department at and its it's not just your everyday variety of excitement Professor Randall Chase joined others in lobbying for more student student student stu- stu dent opportunities in the radio broadcasting field back in 1995 and the outcome of their efforts is finally within sight In fact its it's more than in sight the equipment is ordered the classes are scheduled and Globe Radio will be making its debut in the fall on V Chase says the need for expensive broadcasting facilities has been apparent for some time and now a partnership between President Lynn Cundiff Student Services Administration and the COM Department has produced produced produced pro pro- those facilities along with two new classes for students I i interested in learning the world r of radio s broadcasting Beginning lip radio classes started in the t V spring and an advanced class k will be In the schedule schedule this fall faU h f My role has largely been visionary Chase says but the dean and others have really stepped up with the financing and other things to make this possible Chase has also formed t. t a Student Media Center over- over r 1 seen by the Student Media Council The center involves involves' multiple facilities including the newspaper office and the television television television sion and radio facilities This department has five operating media at present Chase said with enthusiasm Newspaper television radio on-line on and a literary magazine launching this fall The literary magazine will willbe willbe willbe be an expansion of the magazine to be put out by the English department Ceci Strong is the Program Director for Globe Radio and says she couldn't be more thrilled about the new broadcasting broadcast broadcast- ing opportunities at Strong will work as a lab assistant assistant assistant assis assis- tant in classes taught by Art and looks forward to helping students produce their own specialty shows and fine tune their deejay skills Beginning students will get hands on experience in a production production production pro pro- room says Strong while the advanced students work on things like voice tracking tracking tracking track track- ing systems voice inflection and basically how to read without without without with with- out sounding like youre you're read read- ing comes into the picture picture picture pic pic- ture as both professor and technical technical tech tech- technical support Getting the infrastructure infrastructure infrastructure infra infra- structure underway has been a huge hug undertaking as wires and cables are being routed to different different different differ differ- ent areas said For instance the router system for forthe forthe g the television production area has arrived but still needs to be wired That will take some time says he looks forward to teaching with Strong and new faculty member Ben Spencer will be joining the E F FE E t s r a ar 1 m c 14 W r a r A J t Students are excited for the arrival of the new Globe radio station on the Redwood Campus Photo by Dan j department this fall With all that's going on its it's nice to know were we're in good hands Chase was responsible for setting up a radio station while he was a student at Utah State University and later provided provided provided pro pro- vided faculty leadership to the University of Utah student radio station while earning his doctorate doctor doctor- ate and teaching at the same time Chase has been at since 1993 and headed the communication communication communication com com- department from 1998 to 2000 T Strong brings with her a lot of on-air on experience including college college college col col- lege radio She was the Student St Station tion Manager while attending Southern Utah University between 1985 and 1991 and says she absolutely loves the college atmosphere Strong has also worked for years as a deejay deejay deejay dee dee- jay for different radio stations in inthe inthe the Salt Lake area I cant can't wait waitto to get this station up and running running running run run- ning says Strong You just have no idea Professor Art has been teaching at for seven years now and is proud to have made tenure last year He shares in the enthusiasm many students say can be felt in the air as you walk the halls of Building Salt lake Community College is going global C z |
