Show Self Taught Student Leads By Example I By Julie Slama sp Special t o e Globe i j i iSALT SALT LAKE CITY CITY Karyne Karyne Anderson isn t daunted by any any- thing About two years ago when her property management company needed a software presentation program she taught herself Then last year Anderson became involved with Salt Lake Community College s Delta Epsilon Chi chapter where she used her newly founded skills to compete internationally showcasing wireless wireless wireless wire wire- less technology This fall fait she was asked minute last-minute to present a presentation at a statewide conference Now she s running for forthe forthe forthe the Western Regional Vice President of DEX when the international conference comes to Salt Lake City April 13 More than 2000 college students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents will compete in about 20 oriented business-oriented contests Delta Epsilon Chi is an international organization dedicated dedicated dedicated dedi dedi- to students pursuing careers in marketing and business business business busi busi- ness management and provides students with on hands-on experience ence needed in business careers Anderson isn t limiting herself to campaigning She also will be competing with a classmate Eli in the advertising campaign contest after placing first in the state competition last month V When hen Curtis Marketing and Business Communication professor and DEX chapter adviser of about 20 years year asked hento 1 be involved i in Delta v Epsilon Epsilon- Chi Chi she didn t waiver I thought sure this will be a good learning opportunity opportunity opportunity and besides I thrive on stress said Anderson a Bountiful High School graduate And when he asked me again this fall about two weeks before a statewide DEX leadership conference conference conference con con- ference if Id I'd give a Power Point presentation for the group I did it complete with music and video clips embodied into the presentation Delta Epsilon Chi experiences experiences experiences enhance classroom education education education edu edu- cation and allow students to be successful in their business field said We are identifying how business and our educational education education- al experiences enhance the students students' students students' students students' stu stu- stu- stu dents' dents abilities to perform in both arenas said As Karyne began college she knew a little but then the presentation that she used in her sales presentation presentation presentation presen presen- tation opened doors that had not been touched prior to that point Both her business activities ties and her experiences at have helped her to be more productive productive productive tive and effective Colleges and universities ties know to expect strong competition competition competition com com- petition from Salt Lake Community College as it has not only good students but excellent training that reflect the College s good well-rounded well programs said Kathy Walton national Delta Epsilon Chi board of directors past Competitive events are M only one of the numerous ways Delta Epsilon Chi creates learning learning learn- learn ing ng opportunities for nearly j students in marketing I management merchandising j j entrepreneurship and related 1 programs throughout the United J i States and Canada Nevertheless these contests serve as a method for students to demonstrate acquired competencies and receive recognition recognition recognition and awards at local state and national levels At several colleges the Delta Epsilon Chi s competitive events are a base for program curriculum k Students have great opportunities in Delta Epsilon Chi to learn leadership teamwork team teamwork work self-discipline self self- self improvement and preparing skills that will be needed for their careers Prof said For students like Anderson it allows students to put to p practice what they ve learned in the classroom and in their careers As moves forward forward forward for for- ward to more wireless technologies technologies technologies gies on c campus it s important that students are able to learn prepare and present their abilities not only in marketing and business but in technology and this international competition tion is a good platform for them to showcase their skills said The education they're learning in their fields and in technology is the success they'll demonstrate in the business world wood i A II |
