Show Hibernation Seeks Lady Bruins T w I j f J t I fl- fl 3 ii The Lady Bruins fought valiantly last weekend and came up just a little short j By Ben Anderson 1 TT Editor Sports Sorts r At the beginning of the season the Salt Lake Community College Lady Bruins Bruin's basketball team seemed to be unstoppable I If f not fearless Having started off the season with a strong note having having having hav hav- ing only two losses before the start of play and sweeping the first half of play it seemed like the Lady Bruins were destined to be the newly crowned Scenic West Athletic Conference Champions and have a birth in the tourney But in the laws of physics what goes up must come down Now as the Lady Bruins are ready to close the regular season with only two games left before the tourney the girls found themselves themselves themselves them them- selves sitting tied for first place with a 3 13 record tied with Ricks College and Dixie State 1 The dream of hosting the tourney in their home 1 floor seemed close but at atthe atthe the same time too far to reach All the Lady Bruins had to do was win their final 1 P k n 01 L seemed like was taking it to the limit going on an 8 0 run at the start of the game But by bythe bythe bythe the end of the first half the momentum seemed to point in inthe inthe inthe the direction towards Dixie as they made a late run to take a 36 31 time half-time lead game was tied 65 at the end of regulation to force overtime Both teams needed a awin awin awin win badly but the shots they took wouldn't go in With about 30 second remaining was leading 70 69 till Dixie's shot finally went in to toy y M r l' l x The dream of hosting the tourney seemed close but too far to reach s iFt two games and hope and pray that something would happen to Ricks The Dixie State College Rebels Rebel's came up for their own quest to be Champions At the beginning it ti I rt Then the Dixie State Rebels took over in the second half leading midway through the second half when the Lady Bruins made a late run to try and secure the win but Dixie wouldn't would would- nt be let down so easy as as the 3 f J J. J L- L V K v. v y j put the Rebels Rebel's up 71 Coach called time out to plan the play that would help lift the Bruins to a must win situation guard Candace Eichmeier received the ball I faked her opponent out of her shoes and drove to the basket for a lay But the shot w was s snot not high enough as it bricked the side of the rim and Dixie won 7 71 I The next day Snow J H H j College came up to challenge j T but failed as the Lady Bruins needed a must win to secure a top seed in the tourney beating the Badgers 55 52 Desirae Diaz led the Bruin attack with 10 points and Lindsey Karren pulled down seven boards In the Tourney the Lady Bruins drew the third seed and selected to face the sixth seed Snow College played hard i ithe inthe in inthe the first half leading at time half-time 36 33 but the Badgers had a different different different dif dif- dif dif- ferent story in mind as they took it to the Bruins and out scored 50 31 in the second half to extend their season with a 83 67 victory and send the Lady Bruins home packing Brooke Hansen was named to the All first team Candace Mattson was l named as an Honorable Mention A rj 1 |
